Three River Land Trust is a 501 (c) 3 that operates in a fifteen – county region – Anson, Cabarrus, Davidson, Davie, Iredell, Montgomery, Randolph, Richmond, Rowan, Stanly, Moore, Hoke, Scotland, Cumberland, and Harnett. Our mission is to conserve the natural areas, rural landscapes, family farms, scenic rivers, and historic places within North Carolina’s central Piedmont and Sandhills.

Job Description | Chief Development Officer

The Chief Development Officer will focus on building and sustaining major donor and corporate donor relationships in support of the conservation mission of Three Rivers Land Trust (TRLT). This position is central to the continued growth and success of TRLT and local conservation.

We are looking for an authentic conservation-minded person who is passionate about the outdoors and local conservation. A hardworking self-starter with a natural ability to connect and communicate with donors, along with a proven track record of fundraising, preferably for a conservation non-profit organization, is essential.

The Chief Development Officer is a member of the TRLT’s leadership team and a key strategist for all fundraising. This position will work closely with the Executive Director to ensure the financial stability and growth of the organization.

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead, manage, oversee, and evaluate TRLT’s fundraising programs, including major donor, corporate, foundation, membership ($1K and above), planned giving, and other programs.
  2. Identify, research, cultivate, and solicit donors and donor prospects across Three Rivers’ 15-county footprint.
  3. Build and maintain relationships with donor prospects, donors, Board members, corporate and foundation program officers, business leaders, and philanthropists.
  4. Develop and implement capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, special fundraising campaigns, online campaigns, special events, and other fundraising activities.
  5. Lead the Development Team (staff of four) to implement the fundraising strategies and achieve the organization's development goals.
  6. Maintain thorough knowledge of TRLT donors, their giving histories, and priorities.
  7. Prepare detailed revenue estimates and annual projected expenses for the development program.
  8. Research and write grant proposals and produce grant reports to secure operational funding.
  9. Produce fundraising materials, including solicitation letters, thank you letters, and other development materials.
  10. Comply with all federal and state laws, rules and regulations, and professional standards related to fundraising.
  11. Maintain the donor database, ensuring effective data utilization and record-keeping.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 5-10 years of non-profit development experience.
  2. Demonstrated ability to raise funds for a non-profit from various sources.
  3. Strong interest in nature, conservation, and outdoor recreation.
  4. Ability to think strategically and pay attention to detail.
  5. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Proven administrative and management skills.
  7. Strong organizational skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  8. Experience with donor database software, preferably Bloomerang.
  9. Ability to work independently and take initiative while maintaining confidentiality.
  10. Ability to travel and work on weekends as needed.
  11. Commitment to enhancing the workplace and supporting colleagues.

Salary/Benefits

  • Status: Full-time exempt
  • Salary Range: $80,000-$115,000
  • Benefits include employer-paid health, dental, and limited vision coverage, paid holidays, and other paid time off (PTO).
  • Employer-matched 401K

Three Rivers Land Trust is headquartered in Salisbury with a satellite office in Southern Pines. This position would operate out of our Southern Pines location. Travel is required within TRLT territory.
