POSITION: CHIEF CUSTODIAN – LEVEL IV

Location: Magnolia Middle School

Organizes, schedules, and coordinates all facets of the custodial program at a level IV facility within the guidelines established by the Facilities Management Department. Operates and maintains boilers, air conditioning, and all other auxiliary equipment as a Grade 4 stationary engineer (Level IV classification is determined by Harford County Public Schools).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees, prepares, and maintains facilities across large school campuses, including stadiums, tracks, turf fields, tennis courts, auxiliary gyms, swimming pools, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of boilers, HVAC systems, and performs safety inspections.
  • Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and reports findings.
  • Keeps fuel records and orders fuel as needed.
  • Requisitions equipment, tools, parts, and supplies.
  • Assists in evaluating employee performance and enforces policies.
  • Inspects safety, sanitation, and security standards; maintains firefighting equipment.
  • Submits accident reports and performs security checks.
  • Coordinates and supervises custodial staff and supports after-school activities.
  • Performs building and campus cleaning activities.
  • Maintains pesticide logs and assists with pest management.
  • Responds to emergencies, including weather events and repairs.
  • Coordinates snow removal for quick reopening.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
SALARY

This is a full-time, twelve-month position. The salary range is based on Grade 10 of the FY 2024-2025 AFSCME Salary Schedule, starting at $57,623 with a maximum of $80,995. New or returning employees begin at Step 1. Full salary schedules are available at HCPS Vacancies.

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least three years of experience in custodial or related trades, with two years supervisory experience as a Chief Custodian or equivalent.
  • Fourth Grade Stationary Engineer’s License issued by the Maryland State Board of Stationary Engineers.
  • Must attend pesticide application training and maintain certification.
  • Ability to read requisitions, labels, and manage supplies and equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.
  • Physical ability to perform duties, including lifting and climbing.
  • Good communication and supervisory skills.
