Chief Custodian - Central Elementary

To supervise custodial staff and ensure cleaning and maintenance of assigned buildings and grounds. Maintain equipment and supplies required for cleaning and maintenance goals.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school graduate or equivalent with post-secondary school preferred
  • State of Delaware certification for Chief Custodian or ability to meet certification requirements
  • Supervisory experience including and not limited to hiring, development of staff, and progressive discipline
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with building maintenance
  • Effective communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to physically lift up to at least 50 pounds
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule; which may include nights and weekends
  • Legal residency within 50 miles of the geographic boundaries of the district preferred
  • Experience using Outlook, Word and Excel
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises, develops and monitors performance of custodial staff
  • Completes monthly observations and annual evaluations for custodial staff
  • Evaluates performance of staff and completes the progressive discipline process as needed
  • Provides professional development opportunities and hands-on training with staff
  • Facilitates regular staff meetings with direct reports
  • Manages custodial assignments and schedules
  • Requests substitutes as needed and provides direct oversight of responsibilities completed
  • Ensures accuracy and completion of documentation related to use of time by staff
  • Establishes and maintains procedures and processes
  • Inspects all areas of assigned building(s) and grounds and performs custodial preventive maintenance and mechanical work as needed
  • Maintains an inventory of maintenance and custodial supplies and coordinates ordering with the Office of Buildings and Grounds
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on equipment and makes recommendations for inventory
  • Oversees storage and disbursement of custodial supplies and equipment
  • Inspects and maintains all fire and safety equipment in assigned building(s)
  • Completes all required reports timely and accurately
  • Maintains appropriate heating and cooling conditions in compliance with energy management standards
  • Actively participates in professional development opportunities to maintain current knowledge of building systems, maintenance processes, supplies, and equipment
  • Maintains records for preventive maintenance
  • Performs minor repairs/maintenance in the fields of plumbing, carpentry, electricity, heating systems, air conditioning systems and painting
  • Leads completion of duties related to emergencies, such as flooding, broken windows, system failures, etc.
  • Completes other assigned duties during inclement weather, such as snow removal
  • Promotes the safety, health and comfort of students, staff and the public when using assigned building(s) and grounds
  • Completes a 2 hour minimum inspection of assigned building(s) and grounds
  • Responds to all security and fire notifications
  • Completes all other duties as assigned
Additional Duties

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring a clean, safe work environment.

Equipment
  • Use hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools
  • Use of District assigned computer
Safety Requirements
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks.
  • Must comply with school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
Travel Requirements

Travel between schools and the District Office is required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED

NOTE: A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District.
