Job summary

DRMP, a growing transportation engineering firm in the Southeast, seeks a Chief Bridge Engineer to lead complex DOT bridge and infrastructure projects in Atlanta, GA. The role focuses on design leadership, project delivery, and mentoring the team.

The candidate will oversee bridge design, performance assessments, and production of plans, with a strong emphasis on client deadlines and quality control. A PE/SE license and extensive bridge experience are required.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited BS in Civil/Structural Engineering required.
  • Licensed PE and/or SE preferred; Florida registration a plus.
  • Minimum 15+ years post‑registration structural engineering experience; bridge design focus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Structures Project Manager, Engineer of Record, or Design Lead on multi‑discipline transportation projects.
  • Lead as Technical Structures Design Lead for all bridge design and plans development.
  • Direct investigations of design alternatives, data collection, and solution evaluation.
  • Plan and produce structural calculations, reports, drawings, and specs for bridges/transportation structures.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of calculations, reports, drawings, and specs.
  • Lead marketing for bridge pursuits including FDOT responses and technical interviews.
  • Support construction through RFIs, shop drawing reviews, and problem solving.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as Structures Project Manager, Engineer of Record, or Design Lead on multi‑disciplined transportation projects using both conventional and alternative delivery methods
  • Serve as Technical Structures Design Lead for all aspects of bridge design and plans preparation
  • Direct engineering alternatives investigations through the collection and analysis of data, performing calculations, and evaluation of alternate solutions
  • Direct planning, design and production of structural calculations, written reports, engineering drawings, and specifications for projects related to bridge and transportation structures
  • Perform technical reviews (QA/QC) of structural calculations, written reports, engineering drawings, and specifications ensuring appropriate design criteria, procedures and guidelines are followed
  • Lead marketing efforts for bridge project pursuits including FDOT Letters of Response, Presentations and Technical Interviews
  • Support construction phase of projects, including responding to RFI’s, review of shop drawings, problem solving, etc.
  • Train and mentor junior engineers
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Bachelor of Science from an ABET‑accredited university in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer and/or Structural Engineer
  • 15+ years post‑registration structural engineering experience
  • 20+ years of relevant bridge design and plans production experience, which may include reinforced concrete bridges, prestressed/post‑tensioned concrete bridges, steel plate and box girder bridges, retaining walls, box culverts, sign/signal structures, sound barrier walls, and other transportation‑related structures
  • Complex structures design is a plus
  • Experience using a variety of bridge design software that may include FB Multi‑Pier, Leap Bridge Concrete, Smartbridge, LARSA, CSI, STAAD, MDX, Shoring Suite, Atlas, and the FDOT suite of FDOT MathCAD analysis worksheets
  • Proficiency in Microstation, GEOPAK, OpenBridge Modeler, AutoCAD and/or CADD platforms to produce transportation structure designs and plans
  • Ability to do 3D modeling in OpenBridge Modeler is a plus
  • Familiarity with structural/bridge design process through the application of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
  • Ability to guide junior staff as well as participate in the design and detailing of all aspects of small‑to‑large‑scale multi‑discipline bridge projects of varying technical complexity
  • Construction specialty engineering experience is a plus
  • Experience with post‑tensioning applications is a plus
  • Experience with straddle bent design is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and time‑management skills
  • Strong sense of urgency and self‑initiative to meet client deadlines
  • Detail‑oriented team player with an ability to contribute to a positive work environment
  • Valid driver’s license with approved/acceptable driving history
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters (MSE/MSCE) in Civil/Structural Engineering
  • PE and/or SE certification in Florida or the ability to obtain Florida Registration
  • Familiarity with structural/bridge design process through the application of the FDOT Structures Manual and FDOT Construction Specifications
