Job summary

The County of Northumberland seeks a seasoned Chief Assessor to oversee the valuation and assessment of all real property within the county for tax purposes. You will lead the assessment team, ensure accurate appraisals, and maintain fair and compliant processes in line with state and local regulations.

This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication, and the ability to provide technical guidance on complex property tax matters.

The Chief Assessor is responsible for overseeing the accurate assessment of properties within the county for tax purposes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in property assessment, leadership experience, and a commitment to maintaining fair and equitable tax assessments.

Requirements

• Serve as the primary point of contact for property owners and other stakeholders regarding assessment inquiries.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of real property appraisal.
• Knowledge of the State and County laws, regulations and policies governing real property appraisal.
• Knowledge of the types and methods of instruction used in industrial, commercial and residential property.
• Skill in the evaluating of all types of real property for tax purposes.
• Ability to explain assessment and appraisal procedures and to deal with the public in a courteous and effective manner.
• Ability to assign and review the work of subordinate technical staff.
• Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.

Education and Experience:

• CPE Certificate preferred
• Strong knowledge of property tax laws, assessment practices, and appraisal methods.
• Experience in a supervisory role or leadership capacity is preferred.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
