Job summary

Hach, a Veralto company, seeks an R&D Chemist III in Ames, IA, onsite, to develop innovative chemical analysis methods and reagent solutions that safeguard water quality worldwide. You will mentor chemists, engineers, technicians and interns, and drive high-impact product development.

Reporting to the R&D Chemistry Manager, you will collaborate with marketing, engineering, and operations to commercialize products, document work, and translate market needs into design decisions.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field with 0–2 years of experience; OR M.S. with 5+ years; OR B.S. with 12+ years of direct experience in chemistry manufacturing, product development, or R&D.
  • Demonstrated ability in chemistry design, characterization, functional testing, and problem-solving.
  • Expert-level proficiency in analytical laboratory techniques, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and validating new chemical analysis methods for Hach instrumentation through independent research.
  • Creating reagent formulations, calibrations, and quality control procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Collaborating with marketing, engineering, and operations to commercialize new or modified products and applications.
  • Providing technical leadership and mentorship to chemists, engineers, technicians, and interns.
  • Supporting manufacturing through chemistry expertise, training, and problem-solving to improve production efficiency.
  • Documenting development work, reviewing competitive literature, and translating market needs into product design decisions.

Reporting to the R&D Chemistry Manager , the R&D Chemist III plays a key role in developing innovative chemical analysis methods and reagent solutions that directly support Hach’s mission of safeguarding water quality worldwide. This role drives high‑impact product development, mentors emerging talent, and influences strategic decisions that shape the future of water analytics.

This position is part of the Research & Development Chemistry team , located in Ames, IO, and will be Onsite.

In this role, a typical day will look like:

  • Developing and validating new chemical analysis methods for Hach instrumentation through independent research.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field with 0–2 years of experience; OR M.S. with 5+ years; OR B.S. with 12+ years of direct experience in chemistry manufacturing, product development, or R&D.

The below range reflects the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. An associate’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, any collective bargaining agreements, and business or organizational needs.

The compensation range for this role is $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 USD per year. This job is also eligible for Bonus Pay.

We offer a comprehensive package of benefits including paid time off, medical/dental/vision insurance and 401(k) to eligible employees.
