Job description

A Chemist II provides scientific knowledge and support to the company. They possess extensive scientific knowledge and are trained in analytical techniques. They are responsible for the technical conduct of assigned tests, including interpretation, analysis, documentation, and reporting of results. They serve as the single point of study control and assist in writing and validating new protocols, analytical instrumentation, and method development. They act as a master trainer within the company and consult with clients on technical issues.

Education and experience requirements:

Analytical instrumentation experience preferred.

M.S. degree (Chemistry strongly preferred)

Or…

B.S. degree (Chemistry strongly preferred) with two years applicable laboratory experience

Or…

AA/AS degree with three years Chemist I experience.

Essential Duties:

Scientific/General

  • Ensure procedures and reports are current with published methods.
  • Ensure final reports accurately reflect the data, results, and conclusions of testing.
  • Evaluate test results for suitability and determine acceptability.
  • Prepare and review written procedures including SOPs, STPs, and other protocol test procedures and instructions for analysis.
  • Ensure method validation and test controls support the test methodology.
  • Maintain sample and data traceability throughout testing.
  • Ensure calculations and statistics accurately reflect raw data.
  • Record and review test controls and monitors.
  • Perform routine maintenance and operate assigned analytical instruments.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation problems and determine corrective actions.
  • Optimize instrument results with new parameters or setups.

Quality responsibilities

  • Review data quality and recommend improvements to methods or procedures.

Customer Focus

  • Uphold the NL service standard.
  • Host client visits and audits.
  • Consult with clients.
  • Communicate regularly with sponsors, aiming to meet or exceed expectations.
  • Assist with questions from sales, service, quality, and regulatory teams.
  • Coordinate with sponsors on test plans and parameters.
  • Meet or exceed sponsor expectations.
  • Assist with laboratory failure investigations.

Project Management

  • Work with SL/DM to manage test workflow and meet deadlines.
  • Collaborate with other sections to improve efficiency and sponsor experience.
  • Coordinate communication between clients and lab staff.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Review data quality and suggest improvements.
  • Follow applicable regulations (GMP, GLP, ISO, etc.).
  • Adhere to ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 guidelines.
  • Follow company policies and complete required training timely.

Work Environment:

This role operates in a professional laboratory environment, using standard office and lab equipment, including computers, microscopes, pipettes, and analytical instruments. Exposure to biological and chemical hazards, including carcinogens, is possible. Employees must follow biosafety and chemical hygiene policies.

Physical requirements:

  • Stand and move between office and lab locations (30%) and work at a computer (70%).
  • Bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing.
  • Full body movement capability.
  • Occasional push and pull tasks.
  • Work while wearing PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, lab coats.
  • Lift up to 45 lbs.
