Job description

Under supervision, an employee in this class performs entry-level professional work conducting quantitative analyses on samples from marine and fresh surface waters, groundwater, and industrial and domestic wastewater sources. The primary purpose of this position is to monitor the composition of ground and surface waters to detect and guard against pollution. The work involves the supervised use and general maintenance of sophisticated modern laboratory equipment such as an auto-analyzer, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, organic carbon analyzer, and gas chromatograph. The incumbent performs some preparatory and routine functions independently but handles more complex assignments under direct or general supervision, depending on difficulty. Direct supervision may be exercised over Laboratory Technicians and Aides.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sets up, calibrates, and runs automated analysis equipment to analyze water, wastewater, and septage samples.
  • Performs and directs Laboratory Technicians and Aides in sample preparations, simple tests, and analyses.
  • Performs analyses related to wastewater treatment facilities' performance.
  • Prepares materials and reagents for tests.
  • Receives, logs, labels, and stores samples properly.
  • Reads test result charts, calculates, and logs data.
  • Checks supply levels.
  • May testify in court regarding findings.
  • Performs clean-up activities such as washing glassware.

Starting Salary: $54,392 to $88,531
