Job description

Chemist 1 works in a lab conducting experiments on various product forms and to create a new product, or improve an old one. Their duties include examining the chemical make-up of different materials, performing quality control tests on current experiments, and creating technical reports and papers on the specifications and outcomes of tests, products, and processes.

Under the guidance of the Lab Manager The Application Chemist 1 works mostly independently with supervision as needed.

Essential Job Functions
  • Prepare compounds, test solutions and reagents to conduct tests and experiments, then advising and coordinating test procedures.
  • Determine the relationships of chemical and physical properties, composition, structures, and reactions of organic and inorganic compounds.
  • Develop, improve, and customize equipment, products, formulas, analytical methods, and processes.
  • Consult with perfumers, evaluators and scientists on analysis, interpretation, and development of tests.
  • Document findings in technical papers and reports, preparing specifications and testing standards.
  • Work directly with the Lab Manager to ensure that all procedures are followed.
  • Sample preparation and product testing for Commercial, Creative or Technical ends.
  • Keep abreast of technical developments in assigned product categories and anticipate new customer requirements.

  • Develop and modify testing protocols and product formulations to achieve project goals.
  • Keep abreast of technical developments in assigned product categories and anticipate new customer requirements.
  • Provide technical advice to internal departments and customers as needed to achieve project goals.
  • Ensure laboratories meet corporate guidelines for safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory supplies.
  • Keep accurate and complete records of laboratory activities and procedures.
  • Prepare periodic and special reports to keep management and internal departments informed.
  • Train, develop and motivate staff to meet these goals.
  • Other requirements are deemed necessary by Manager
Educational Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or closely related field required. MS degree preferred.

Experience

5+ years of fragrance industry experience in application, formulation development, and product performance evaluation. Experience across personal care, home care, air care required, along with the ability to independently manage projects from concept through commercialization.

The equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.

Physical Demands

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines which includes a computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, telephone, laboratory equipment, etc. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may handle hazardous chemicals in the laboratory. The employee will be required to wear all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to eye protection, gloves, and lab coat. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Physical demands vary from sedentary to moderately active work to include standing, walking, and reaching for prolonged periods of time, not to exceed 8 hours for any given activity.
