Job description

This position will establish and conduct complex laboratory assignments under minimal supervision. The candidate will be responsible for lab quality system and interfacing with engineering and compliance groups. This position requires communication with other refinery departments and reports to the Laboratory Supervisor.

Job Duties
  • Samples and conducts all levels of tests and trains others to perform standard tests on raw materials, intermediates, and finished products.
  • Ensures proper sample management including sampling, maintaining sample integrity, and sample retains.
  • Ensures testing is carried out per established methods/procedures.
  • Records, reports, and certifies results.
  • Reviews result submissions from various labs for accuracy and off-spec issues.
  • Develops and implements new methods/procedures.
  • Maintains and continuously improves SQC program including precision and accuracy charting and proficiency testing.
  • Performs routine to complex and corrective maintenance and calibrations on laboratory equipment.
  • Controls data management and record-keeping.
  • Performs audits of lab quality system.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains and improves LIMS data management system.

May also perform other duties, including:

  • Works with outside testing laboratories to coordinate special requests and compliance testing.
  • Monitors process control of plant streams, purity of products and composition of fuel gases, liquefied petroleum products, and various levels of Hydrogen.
  • Provides support to operations with product blending.
  • Provides support documentation for product quality disputes.
Experience

A minimum of five years of on-the-job experience are required.

A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Chemistry or related field is required.

Required Skills

Advanced knowledge of laboratory testing and ability to apply this knowledge. Working knowledge of petroleum products and testing. Ability to train and lead the work of others. Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations, intermediate reading and writing skills, ability to effectively communicate with others, both written and verbal communication.

May lead the work of others regularly. May be designated as relief lab supervisor if needed.

Work Conditions

Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, outside, and laboratory environment including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment. Subject to all temperatures, weather, and varying road conditions. May be required to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and a rotating schedule including overtime.
