Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • State‑required pesticide applicator license or eligible within 90 days.
  • Experience in turf chemical applications preferred; golf course experience encouraged.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or applicant tracking systems.
  • Strict adherence to safety guidelines for pesticide handling, mixing, and application.
  • Uses PPE as required at all times.
  • Maintains clean storage for chemicals and tools.
  • Reports safety hazards or spills promptly.
  • Participates in OSHA Hazard Communication training.

Responsibilities

  • Applies herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers to greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and landscaped areas.
  • Calibrates and operates spray and spreader equipment with precision.
  • Maintains logs of chemical applications in compliance with regulations.
  • Inspects and maintains spray equipment for safety and functionality.
  • Keeps chemical storage areas safe and organized per OSHA/EPA/state laws.
  • Assists with daily course setup and general maintenance tasks.
  • Keeps up‑to‑date on chemical labels, SDS, and application techniques.

Position Description
POSITION SUMMARY

The Chemical Technician, also known as the Spray Technician, is responsible for the precise and safe application of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and other turf management products throughout the golf course property. This position plays a key role in supporting course health, aesthetics, and playability. Reporting to the Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, the Chemical Technician operates and maintains specialized application equipment and ensures all handling, mixing, and application procedures comply with local, state, and federal regulations. While not all individuals in this role pursue a career in agronomy, it is a valuable step toward long‑term growth in the golf maintenance industry.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Comprehensive knowledge of chemical application equipment, calibration, and turf safety protocols.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess a state‑required pesticide applicator license, or obtain one within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience in turf chemical applications preferred; golf course experience strongly encouraged.
  • Familiarity with SDS documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Positive attitude, professionalism, and ability to work in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Understanding of internal controls and confidentiality procedures.
  • American Red Cross first aid certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or application tracking systems preferred.
  • Strictly adheres to safety guidelines related to pesticide handling, mixing, and application.
  • Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) as required at all times (gloves, respirators, eye protection, etc.).
  • Maintains a clean and secure storage environment for chemicals and application tools.
  • Immediately reports any safety hazards, spills, or exposure incidents.
  • Participates in OSHA‑required training, including the Hazard Communication Standard.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Applies herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers to greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and landscaped areas.
  • Calibrates and operates mechanical and hand‑operated spray and spreader equipment with precision.
  • Maintains detailed, accurate logs of all chemical applications in compliance with regulations.
  • Inspects and maintains spray equipment to ensure functionality and safety.
  • Maintains safe, organized chemical storage and mixing areas in accordance with OSHA, EPA, and state laws.
  • Assists with daily course setup and general maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Stays current on chemical labels, application techniques, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Compiles reports of pesticide and fertilizer usage for the Superintendent’s review.
  • Prepares and applies chemical treatments according to schedule and weather conditions.
  • Tracks product inventory and communicates ordering needs.
  • Conducts routine inspections of treated areas for effectiveness and potential reapplication needs.
  • Participates in training and safety meetings related to chemical use and hazard communication.
  • May assist with other maintenance functions such as mowing, bunker care, or hand‑watering.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to walk long distances (up to 5 miles/day) and lift 50 lbs.
  • Outdoor work environment in all weather conditions (heat, rain, humidity, cold).
  • Frequent lifting, mixing, walking, bending, and spraying.
  • Exposure to chemicals, spray equipment, fumes, and moving machinery.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Outdoors in heat and humidity, with exposure to lawn maintenance equipment, chemicals, and computers for recordkeeping and scheduling.

SCHEDULING

Golf Course Maintenance operates 7 days per week. The Chemical Technician must be available for early mornings, weekends, and overtime hours as required by weather conditions or treatment timing.
