The USALCO Michigan City Plant is a major Alum producer within the manufacturing network of a leading provider of aluminum-based component products used in water treatment, pulp and paper manufacturing, the making of catalysts for oil refining, the housing market and other sectors. The right individual will have a can-do attitude, the ability to be part of a team while operating independently, and consistently perform to very high standards.

Job Summary:

The person in this role is responsible for packaging, labeling, and loading manufactured products while ensuring compliance with all company policies. The position requires a motivated, detail-oriented, and results-driven team player who:

  • Incorporates safety and quality into every decision while performing day-to-day activities
  • Effectively communicates with Supervisor and peers
  • Shift work and weekend work may be required
  • Efficiently packages and loads manufactured products
  • Operates a forklift if needed to unload raw materials
  • Seeks opportunities for process improvement and collaborates with management and peers to implement changes

The employee will be a positive, task-oriented individual with material handling experience and mechanical aptitude. Responsibilities include safe and efficient packaging and loading of products into tank trailers and unloading raw materials from railcars. Good communication skills are essential for coordinating with supervisors and peers.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment.
  2. Apply all safety rules, work guidelines, and procedures.
  3. Wear and maintain personal protective equipment when working with hazardous chemicals.
  4. Develop and implement process, equipment, and procedural improvements.
  5. Daily Responsibilities:
  • Conduct plant and equipment safety/housekeeping audits
  • Assist in loading/unloading trailers
  • Unload raw materials as needed
  • Complete Certificates of Compliance for trailers
  • Accurately complete paperwork including batch sheets, counts, and bills of lading
  • Maintain and communicate PVD Board information
  • Support plant operations as needed
  • Maintenance:
    • Complete work requests for maintenance issues
    • Inspect equipment daily and report issues

    Other duties include working overtime, providing physical labor, and supporting business goals.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Ability to prioritize daily packaging requirements
    • Attention to detail
    • Knowledge of manufacturing equipment and forklift operation
    • Dependability, flexibility, and responsiveness
    • Clear communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Basic computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office

    Education:

    • High School Diploma or GED

    Experience:

    • Experience in chemical, pharmaceutical, or food manufacturing environments
    • At least 6 months of material handling and forklift experience

    Essential Functions:

    • Obtain forklift license within 30 days of hire
    • Lift 50-75 lbs routinely
    • Stand for 60-70% of shift
    • Traverse catwalks and confined spaces
    • Work at heights up to 50 feet
