About the College/Unit/Department

UGA Cooperative Extension was founded in 1914 to bring research-based agricultural information to the people of Georgia. County agents provide soil and water test kits and instruction, advice on safe pesticide use, publications, computer programs, and lessons in consumer skills to improve Georgians’ quality of life. UGA Extension coordinates 4-H, Georgia’s largest youth program, reaching more than 2.6 million Georgians through education programs each year.

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Position Summary

This position provides paraprofessional work with County Extension Educator/Agents in a food and nutrition education program. Plans, organizes, schedules, and conducts nutrition and food safety classes for limited resource clients.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Ability to learn basic food preparation skills.
  • Strong communication skills and experience interacting with a wide range group of people.
  • Ability to relate effectively to young people and adults.
  • Ability to lead groups effectively including ability to speak clearly and with sufficient volume to be heard without amplification.
  • Skilled in working with clients with limited resources.
Physical Demands
  • Stand for long periods to effectively present program to attendees.
  • Lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Speak effectively to audiences without amplification.
  • Effectively use kitchen tools including knives, spoons, blenders, choppers, etc.
  • Driving to perform job related duties.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Effectively organizes time and materials by reviewing program lessons, efficiently develops shopping lists for necessary ingredients.
  • Utilizes Outlook calendar to schedule and communicate programs, county events and activities.
  • Complies with county funds policy/practices to purchase food demonstration supplies.
  • Submits mileage reimbursement for any shopping/program delivery/training.
  • Effectively conducts food preparation activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of inventory and supplies for demonstrations.
  • Ensures full knowledge of educational content to effectively present lessons.
  • Leads activities and discussions for an audience of variable sizes.
  • Ensures food safety in transportation of food supplies.
  • Ensures effective data collection from class participants.
  • Conducts activities that are responsive to the needs of the client.
