Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; advanced degree a plus.

• Understanding of pneumatic and/or hydraulic systems, sealing, electrical systems.

Responsibilities

• Design prototype chassis hardware and electromechanical systems using CATIA.
• Create detailed 2D drawings and GD&T packs for fabrication.
• Own component design and release through the product lifecycle.
• Evaluate performance of mechanical assemblies (static, dynamic, thermal).
• Develop and execute component tests and data analysis.
• Support vehicle-level development, integration, and bring-up.
• Coordinate with Tier 1 suppliers on designs and deliveries.
• Maintain technical documentation and specs.
• Collaborate with mechatronics, controls, AI teams.

Source One is a consulting services company and we’re currently looking for the following individual to work as a consultant for our direct client, an on-demand autonomous mobility company in Foster City, CA.

Job Title: Chassis Engineer - Actuators (Contractor)

Pay Rate: $92.75/hour (W-2)

Overview: Chassis Engineer – Actuators to support the design, development, testing, validation, and release of electromechanical components for an advanced active suspension system. In this role, you will own component design and release activities from prototype development through testing, manufacturing, and vehicle integration. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams and Tier 1 suppliers to develop reliable, efficient chassis actuator systems for autonomous vehicles while meeting cost, weight, timing, and performance targets. The role focuses primarily on strut and spring design, with additional responsibility for related suspension, hydraulic, and electromechanical systems.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on mechanical engineer who has taken automotive hardware from concept and CAD design through testing, validation, release, manufacturing, and vehicle integration. You have strong suspension or chassis engineering experience, understand electromechanical and hydraulic systems, and are comfortable owning hardware development while coordinating with suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams. Experience with struts, air springs, dampers, and active suspension systems is particularly relevant.

Key Responsibilities:

• - Design prototype chassis hardware and electromechanical systems using CATIA V5/V6.
• - Create detailed 2D engineering drawings and GD&T packages for fabrication and assembly.
• - Own component design, engineering documentation, and release activities through the product development lifecycle.
• - Evaluate the static, dynamic, structural, and thermal-mechanical performance of mechanical assemblies.
• - Develop and execute component testing and characterization, including test methods, data analysis, and validation activities.
• - Support vehicle-level development, integration, testing, bring-up, and operation.
• - Work with Tier 1 suppliers to manage component designs, engineering documentation, development activities, and deliveries.
• - Coordinate engineering milestones and component execution while balancing cost, weight, schedule, and performance requirements.
• - Develop and maintain technical documentation, including requirements and specifications, FMEAs, 2D/3D drawings, PLM release documentation, and system- and component-level technical specifications.
• - Collaborate with manufacturing, assembly, vehicle integration, and other engineering teams to successfully implement components on autonomous vehicle platforms.
• - Work cross-functionally with specialists in areas such as mechatronics, robotics, controls, AI, and computer vision.

Required Qualifications:

• - Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Master’s or PhD is a plus
• - Hands-on experience designing and developing chassis or suspension components, particularly struts, air springs, dampers, or related systems
• - Experience with CATIA V5 or V6 and detailed 2D engineering drawings, including GD&T
• - Experience with component development, testing, validation, and release
• - Understanding of pneumatic and/or hydraulic systems, sealing systems, electrical systems, and system architecture
• - Experience with vehicle engineering, chassis systems, and vehicle development
• - Knowledge of automotive component development and engineering release processes
• - Ability to plan and coordinate engineering activities against long-term program schedules
• - Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
• - Ability to work effectively with engineering teams, manufacturing, management, and suppliers

Preferred Qualifications:

• - Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
• - Deeper experience with vehicle suspension, dampers, struts, air springs, and vehicle ride dynamics
• - Experience with electromechanical systems, such as air suspension, active dampers, air pumps, hydraulic pumps, or valves
• - Experience with hydraulic system development and vehicle dynamics development/tuning
• - Experience with CAN and vehicle networking
• - Experience in an automotive OEM or major Tier 1 supplier environment
• - Proficiency with Simulink and pneumatic or hydraulic system modeling
• - Experience with Polarion, Jira, or Confluence
• - Patents or other demonstrated contributions to automotive or electromechanical technology
