Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Texas is seeking a qualified Registered Nurse for a unit under the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The RN will perform daily assignments, document care in the EHR, assist with exams, and administer medications.

The role requires a valid TX RN license and at least two years of nursing experience, including six months as an RN. Ideal candidates may have correctional nursing experience and/or a BSN.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
• Two years of nursing experience, with at least 6 months as an RN.
• Possession of a valid RN license as approved by the Texas State Board of Examiners.

Responsibilities

• Make daily assignments and ensure completion.
• Communicate patient data using EHR to support decision-making.
• Assist with exams/procedures and document interventions in EHR.
• Administer or assist with medication administration and documentation.
• Attend regular staff meetings and share unit information.
• Maintain knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.
• Monitor patient access to care for housing areas on shift.
• Ensure accuracy of counts for sharps, instruments, and keys and log appropriately.
• Accept on-call rotations as required.
• Assist in planning, coordinating, and directing unit management functions.
• Respond to requests promptly and professionally.

Position Description

Employees in this classification are responsible for nursing care at unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Implements unit objectives and administrative policies. This position is under clinical supervision of the Unit Director of Nurses.

Major/Essential Functions

• Makes daily assignments as appropriate and ensures all daily assignments are accomplished.
• Communicates patient data using Electronic Health Record (EHR) to support decision‑making to improve patient care.
• Assists with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EHR.
• Administer or assist with administration and documentation of medication.
• Supports the goal of the unit by attending meetings and sharing the information with the staff in regular staff meetings.
• Maintains working knowledge of current issues and treatment modalities.
• Monitor patient Access to Care for housing areas assigned to your shift.
• Assures that physical counts of sharps, instruments, & keys are correct and documented in appropriate logs.
• Accepts on call rotation.
• Assist in planning, coordinating, directing management functions for the unit.
• Responds to all request in a timely manner as required.

Registered Nurse Shift Differential

Day Shift Employees: Earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday.

Night Shift Employees: Earn an extra $4.00 per hour for shifts worked Monday through Friday.

Earn an extra $8.00 per hour for shifts worked on Saturday and Sunday.

Required Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nursing program. Two years of nursing experience, with at least 6 months of that experience as a Registered Nurse. Possession of a valid, current RN license as approved by the Texas State Board of Examiners.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 1 year of correctional experience. BSN.
