Job Overview
Charge Nurse assists the Department Manager in overseeing the day‑to‑day operations of the unit on his/her assigned shift. This function is in accordance with Michigan Public Health Code Act 368 of 1078, Article 15 (Health Occupations), Part 172 (Nursing), and the ANA Registered Nurse Standards.
Under the direction and delegation of the manager, assists with planning, implementing, and evaluating current practices to promote high‑quality, cost‑effective care; ensures focus and emphasis on enhancing patient and staff satisfaction; performs other duties as assigned. This position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her area.
Pay Range
$34.00 – $49.18 per hour
Employment Type
Part Time, 48 hours every 2 weeks
Schedule
7:00pm – 7:30am, 2 shifts a week
Requirements
- Graduate of accredited Registered Nursing Program required
- Current Michigan RN License required
- Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider (or completed within 60 days of hire) required
- ACLS Certification or completed within one year of hire required
- PALS certification or completed within one year of hire required
- Certification in specialty area (CCRN, CRN, CNOR, CEN, etc) preferred
Responsibilities
- Assist the Department Manager in overseeing the day‑to‑day operations of the unit on assigned shift
- Assist with planning, implementing, and evaluating current practices to promote high‑quality, cost‑effective care
- Ensure focus on enhancing patient and staff satisfaction
- Promote patient safety by maintaining high standards of care and implementing the policies and procedures of the hospital and the unit
- Assist in developing and maintaining department‑specific policies and procedures, utilizing evidence‑based practice
- Maintain the ANA Standards of Professional Performance including quality of care, performance appraisal, education, collegiality, ethics, collaboration, research and resource utilization
- Provide clinical mentorship and serve as a resource for unit personnel
- Provide timely, fair, and unbiased performance feedback to unit personnel
- Assist employees in the achievement of annual performance goals
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge and assist the unit manager with employee performance reviews
- Monitor productivity and implement cost‑improvement initiatives
- Assist in daily staffing plan development and implementation
- Adjust clinical assignments based on patient care needs and staff skills
- Assist manager in interviewing potential new staff and implementing recruitment/retention plan
- Assist nurse educator in successful orientation of new staff
- Ensure availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies
- Coordinate patient throughput to optimize patient flow while maintaining quality care
- Collaborate with the unit manager to implement and monitor quality improvement initiatives
- Participate in special projects and promote staff involvement in change initiatives
