Job summary

Providence at Home with Compassus is seeking a Chaplain to deliver professional spiritual care across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. You will uphold the mission and values of the Department of Spiritual Health Services and align with facility policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Psychology, Divinity, or related field.
  • Completion of at least one CPE unit (ACPE, USCCB/CCA, or CASC/ACSS).
  • Minimum one year of experience in spiritual/pastoral support; loss, grief, bereavement, or trauma experience preferred.
  • National Chaplain Certification required within three years of hire.
  • Board certification through APC/SCA/NACC preferred for Providence at Home locations.

Position Specific Responsibilities
  • Provide effective spiritual support and appropriate religious/spiritual resources that contribute to the well-being of care recipients, their families, and caregivers.
  • Provide spiritual care that respects diversity and differences, including but not limited to culture, gender, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious practices.
  • Triage and manage crises in the practice of spiritual care.
  • Formulate and utilize individualized spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes, and care plans; accurately and concisely document care in appropriate records.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships, including collaborative relationships with community clergy and faith group leaders.
  • Understand and function within the institutional culture and systems, utilizing business principles appropriate to the role.
  • Promote, facilitate, and support ethical decision-making and integrate research literature into spiritual care practice
Education And/or Experience
  • Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • State-Specific Requirements (Alaska, Oregon, and Washington):
    • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Psychology, Divinity, or a related field.
    • Required: Completion of at least one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) accredited or approved by ACPE, USCCB/CCA, or CASC/ACSS.
    • Preferred: Master’s degree in a related field.
  • State-Specific Requirements (California):
    • Required: Master’s Degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, or equivalent applicable education from an accredited institution.
    • Required: Completion of at least one (1) unit of accredited CPE (4 units preferred).
  • State-Specific Requirements (Texas):
    • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field and one (1) unit of accredited CPE for Providence at Home roles.
  • Work Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the provision of spiritual/pastoral support to individuals or families required. One (1) year of experience related to loss, grief, bereavement, or trauma preferred.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
  • National Chaplain Certification: Required within three (3) years of hire.
  • Board Certification (Preferred): Professional certification through organizations such as the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Spiritual Care Association (SCA), or National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) is preferred for all Providence at Home locations.
  • California-Specific Safety Requirements:
    • Required: California Fire and Life Safety Card required within 30 days of hire for caregivers at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and Providence Tarzana Medical Center.
  • General Requirements: Current, valid driver’s license and state-minimum automobile insurance maintained.
Skills And Abilities
  • Language: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and governmental regulations; ability to effectively present information to leaders, team members, and external parties.
  • Catholic Context: For those working in a Catholic context, knowledge of the Religious and Ethical Directives of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops is required.
  • Ecclesiastical Standing: For Catholic priests, must be ordained and in good standing with faculties provided by the local bishop.
  • Clinical Practice: Ability to incorporate spiritual and emotional dimensions of human development into practice; ability to facilitate theological/spiritual reflection.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The demands of this role necessate a team member to effectively perform essential functions, including regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity, with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and conditions typical to a healthcare setting is expected.
