Located in the heart of Atlanta at one of the America's most innovative and diverse research universities, the Georgia State University School of Public Health (SPH) educates practitioners and thought leaders while engaging in research and outreach that addresses urgent health challenges and promotes health equity. The Georgia State SPH offers a range of CEPH-accredited degree programs, from a bachelor's degree in public health to an MPH in six concentrations, a PhD in four concentrations and a DrPH program for professionals in the field. Our research and community engagement have been funded with $18.8 million in external funding over the past year alone, with areas of emphasis that include applied biostatistics and epidemiologic methodology; cancer, chronic disease epidemiology, and social determinants; infectious diseases; and tobacco, alcohol and other substance use, among others.

Among public institutions, the Georgia State School of Public Health is ranked in the top 25 in the latest U.S. News and World Report ranking of Best Public Health Colleges. The Georgia State SPH is one of the most diverse schools of public health in America, with 70% of students self-identifying as members of a minority group. The School of Public Health at Georgia State University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences to begin Fall 2025. This is a tenure track position at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The Chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences promotes student and faculty success and advances the mission of the School of Public Health by leading their department in achieving annual strategic goals set by the school and university in the areas of education, research, and service. The Chair oversees all administrative functions within the department related to financial operations; course scheduling and staffing; faculty review, workload, recruitment, and retention; student disciplinary and appeals process; and academic program management. Representing their department, the Chair contributes to the strategic planning, vision, and direction of the school and facilitates communication between faculty and senior leadership within the school and university. The Chair serves as a resource for faculty, promotes faculty development, and cultivates an interdisciplinary and collaborative community within the department.








Doctorate in Public Health, Biostatistics, Environmental Health/Science, Epidemiology, or a related field.




The ideal candidate will have an established and focused program of research that includes collaboration with other researchers in the field, a strong publication record, and a record of success in extramural research funding. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have previous experience with graduate-level instruction and mentoring and a demonstrated commitment to student success. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, and candidates must display a willingness and ability to contribute to the university and profession through service activities.
