Job summary

Southside Behavioral Health is seeking a qualified Nurse Practitioner to perform psychiatric evaluations and ongoing management for individuals with behavioral health needs and co-occurring disorders. The role emphasizes evidence-based practice, documentation accuracy, and collaboration with a care team.

Responsibilities include reviewing records, prescribing medications per VA guidelines, counseling patients and families, and monitoring for adverse effects, with a strong commitment to crisis

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
• Nurse Practitioner license in VA with psychiatric certification.
• Minimum one year of clinical health-care experience.
• Knowledge of serious mental illness and substance use disorders.
• Ability to intervene in crisis situations.
• Criminal background and drug screening clearance required.
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Responsibilities

• Perform psychiatric evaluations and management of individuals with behavioral health and/or co-occurring disorders.
• Review records and determine medication needs; prescribe per VA guidelines.
• Maintain and document in EHR per state/federal guidelines and SBH policy.
• Monitor PMPs and document results; adjust medication lists as needed.
• Counsel patients and families on medications, effects and side effects.
• Coordinate care with nursing, clinical and SBH staff; provide education.
• Support crisis intervention and safety planning as needed.

Job description

SBH is seeking a qualified individual who will be responsible for the psychiatric evaluation and management of individuals with behavioral health, intellectual or developmental disabilities, and/or co-occurring substance use disorder.

Responsibilities

• Completes comprehensive evaluations of individuals with behavioral health and/or co-occurring substance use disorder to determine current mental status, diagnosis, medical comorbidity treatment needs and medication needs.
• Reviews documentation by nursing staff, clinical staff, SBH staff and outside records and discusses cases as needed to determine the medication needs of individuals receiving services.
• Prescribes and orders medication in compliance with VA Board of Pharmacy regulations and guidelines and best practice standards.
• Maintains required documentation in the EHR per state and federal guidelines and SBH policy and procedure.
• Reviews individuals’ medical profiles in EHR and updates medication list as needed.
• Checks the VA Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and documents results in EHR.
• Counsels individuals and/or family members concerning appropriate use, anticipated effects and side effects of psychotropic medications.
• Provides information and education to families of individuals receiving services concerning psychiatric illness and medical comorbidity as pertains to psychiatric illness.
• Monitors individuals for adverse reactions to medications and provides individual and family education on Body Mass Index (BMI) and refers individuals for BMI follow up and primary care screenings.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Nursing from an Accredited School of Nursing.
• Nurse Practitioner licensed in VA to practice medicine and certification as a psychiatric nurse practitioner required
• At least one year of experience in a health setting, providing nursing services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorder preferred.
• Considerable knowledge of serious mental illness and substance abuse issues, diagnostic categories, treatment modalities, intervention techniques, counseling theories, and behavioral health services.
• Comprehensive knowledge of psychotropic medication effects and potential side effects.
• Ability to effectively intervene in a crisis situation.
• Must meet all criminal background and drug screening requirements.
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record, required.
