Job description

The Certified Marine Yamaha Technician performs diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on Yamaha outboard engines and associated marine systems to ensure optimal performance and safety. This role requires technical expertise, hands-on skills, and Yamaha-specific certifications to service a variety of watercraft at marinas, dealerships, or service centers. The technician collaborates with sales teams, communicates with customers, and adheres to safety and manufacturer standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnostics and Repairs: Accurately diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in Yamaha outboard engines using diagnostic tools and Yamaha's proprietary systems. Perform repairs efficiently, including fuel systems, ignition, charging systems, and digital electronic controls.
  • Scheduled Maintenance: Conduct routine services such as 20-, 100-, 500-, and 1,000-hour maintenance procedures, including oil changes, filter replacements, water pump service, spark plug service, timing belt adjustments, and compression tests.
  • Vessel Rigging and Installation: Rig new vessels and engines, install outboard motors, and configure hydraulic steering systems in coordination with sales departments.
  • Inspections: Inspect customer vessels to identify necessary services, recommend repairs, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Parts Management: Utilize Yamaha's website and systems to assess engine models, locate parts, and maintain inventory for repairs.
  • Documentation: Keep precise records of work performed, document repairs, and communicate findings effectively to customers and team members.
  • Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service by explaining repairs, offering maintenance advice, and ensuring vessels are ready for use.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) protocols and company safety policies during all repair and maintenance tasks.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a marine technology program (e.g., associate degree or certificate) or Yamaha Marine University training is highly preferred.
  • Certifications: Yamaha Marine Maintenance Certification (e.g., Introduction to Outboard Systems, Portable Engines, Midrange Engines, Inline Engines, or V-Engine platforms) or Yamaha Master Technician Certification is required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a marine technician or equivalent mechanical experience (automotive or diesel mechanics may be considered).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing Yamaha outboard engines, including fuel injection systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems.
    • Familiarity with Yamaha diagnostic tools (e.g., YDS computer program) and manufacturer websites for parts and service information.
    • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment effectively.
  • Tools: Must possess a full complement of tools suitable for Yamaha outboard repairs.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving and attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy equipment, work in various weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks in a marina or shop environment.
  • Preferred: Additional certifications (e.g., Mercury, Suzuki, or American Boat and Yacht Council [ABYC]) and experience with vessels under 28 feet.
Work Environment
  • Location: Marinas, boat dealerships, repair shops, or service centers. Some roles may require on-site repairs at docks or customer locations.
  • Schedule: Full-time, with potential for overtime during peak boating seasons. Some positions may offer seasonal work.
  • Conditions: Work may involve exposure to water, chemicals, and outdoor elements. Technicians must follow safety protocols to mitigate risks.
