Responsibilities

  • Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments or walk-ins; record weight and vital signs, document patient history in the EMR.
  • Assist the veterinarian with routine and emergency appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
  • Perform patient restraint, process laboratory samples, handle medications as directed, maintain EMR.
  • Schedule appointments, educate clients, relay test results, manage records and accounts receivable.
  • Prepare patients for surgical/dental procedures; support anesthesia induction and monitoring; discharge or transfer as needed.
  • Provide in-hospital treatments including medications and IV therapies; keep patients clean and nourished; escort canines when needed.
  • Train and mentor new staff; disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Maintain a clean hospital environment and follow maintenance schedules.

Job description

Position Purpose

The purpose of this Veterinarian Technician position is to provide excellent veterinary care to patients at our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital and deliver phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Technician represents the mission and values to all clients and partners, sets the tone for the technical and customer support team, and fosters cohesion and motivation within the hospital partners.

Essential Job Functions
  • Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments or walk‑ins and escort them into an exam room; obtain weight and vital signs, record all in the electronic medical record, and begin documentation of the patient visit by taking a thorough patient history.
  • Assist the veterinarian with routine and emergency appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia, under direct supervision of the veterinarian(s) and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty.
  • Perform patient restraint, obtain and process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications at the direction of the veterinarian, and maintain the electronic medical record.
  • Schedule appointments, communicate with and educate clients, relay test results to doctors and clients, maintain and update inventory as well as client/patient records, and manage accounts receivable.
  • Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures; support induction and monitoring of anesthetized patients, record vital parameters, monitor patients during recovery, and prepare them for discharge or transfer to an overnight care facility as needed.
  • Provide in‑hospital treatments for sick patients, including injectable and oral medications, intravenous therapies, and care such as keeping patients clean, watered, and fed when indicated and escorting canine patients when necessary.
  • Participate in training of new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Keep the hospital environment neat and clean; perform regular cleaning based on necessity and a pre‑determined maintenance schedule.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Provide backup phone and front‑desk support as needed.
Nature of Supervision

The Veterinary Technician takes direct supervision from the veterinarians and the Hospital Office Manager or Hospital Leader on Duty; overall direction is provided by the Hospital Office Manager.

Planning and Problem Solving

Like all team members, the Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in ensuring that day‑to‑day operation of the hospital is efficient and provides an optimal experience for patients and clients.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no immediate supervisory duties.

Education / Experience
  • College or college‑equivalent education (completed) as required for becoming a Credentialed Veterinary Technician in the state where the hospital is located.
  • At least 1 year of previous experience as a Veterinary Technician or working in a veterinary practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Compassionate and sympathetic; able to maintain a professional attitude and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
  • Telephone and computer skills.
  • Team player willing to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change.
Work Environment

The majority of job duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care full‑service hospital. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds as necessary), and standing for long periods of time, with a large amount of time spent in direct contact with clients and their pets.

Salary Range

$18.75 - $30.25
