Job Description

General Purpose of Job: Under direction of a Physician or Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses in the care of patients in the Operating Room.

Essential Duties:

• Maintain knowledge and practice of aseptic technique.
• Assist the circulating nurse in the preparation of surgical procedures and during room turnovers between procedures.
• Prepare sterile field for surgical procedures, ensuring proper instruments and supplies are available for use.
• During the surgical procedure:
• Anticipate needs for surgeon and pass instruments and supplies;
• Function as assistant, when needed;
• Obtain counts with circulating nurse;
• Care for specimens according to procedure;
• Maintain proper care of instruments and supplies when procedure is finished.
• Maintain equipment, supplies, and environmental safety.
• Maintain knowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
• Maintain standards by participating in in-services, committees, etc.
• Function as preceptor to new associates and students.

Job Requirements

General Requirements:

• Certified Surgical Tech
• Current BLS certification

Work Experience:

• Previous surgical tech experience preferred

Education:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Formal Aseptic Technique Training

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Demonstrate computer skills including word processing, databases, and e-mail.
• Excellent verbal and communication skills.
