Job description

CERTIFIED SURGICAL TECHNICIAN - FLEXSTAFF

  1. Implements and communicates the age-specific plan of care, providing thorough reports at shift changes and relief times. Communicates with team members regarding special equipment, supplies, and care implementation per established policy.
  2. Participates in turnover activities and room setup for each surgical procedure, including connecting suction, electrical cords, power cables, and electrocautery; breaks down the operating room after each procedure; assists in ensuring adequate stock for patient care.
  3. Monitors each case to ensure infection control measures and sterilization standards are met. Establishes and maintains a sterile field, monitors aseptic techniques, documents actions, and takes corrective measures as needed.
  4. Adheres to aseptic principles, including use of sterile instruments and supplies. Follows procedures for instrument decontamination and assists with sterilization processes.
  5. Maintains environmental controls and ensures proper waste disposal.
  6. Performs sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN according to policy, and takes corrective action when counts are incorrect.
  7. Ensures the safe use of equipment and instrumentation before, during, and after surgery. Assists as needed under the surgeon's direction, including holding retractors, anticipating equipment needs, and troubleshooting equipment issues.
  8. Assists the surgeon with patient care procedures, including specimen labeling, tapping mallet, cutting suture (licensed personnel only), and performing skin prep.
  9. Performs related duties as assigned.
ADA Essential Functions
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Successful completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist program and holding a CST credential from NBSTSA.
OR
  • Completion of an appropriate military training program for surgical technology.
  • Must be in good standing with NYS regulations.
  • BLS certification is preferred.
  • Ability to function effectively in emergency situations.
