Job summary

Qualifications

  • BLS certification preferred.

Job description

CERTIFIED SURGICAL TECHNICIAN - FLEXSTAFF

  • Implements and communicates the age-specific plan of care, providing thorough reports at shift change and relief times. Communicates with team members regarding special equipment, supplies, and care implementation per policy.
  • Participates in turnover activities and room setup for surgical procedures, including connecting suction, electrical cords, power cables, and electrocautery; breaks down the operating room after procedures; assists with supply stock management.
  • Monitors each case to ensure infection control measures and sterilization standards are met. Maintains a sterile field, monitors aseptic technique, documents actions, and takes corrective measures when necessary.
  • Adheres to aseptic principles using sterile instruments and supplies. Assists with instrument decontamination, processing, and sterilization.
  • Maintains environmental controls and waste disposal precautions.
  • Performs sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN as per policy, and takes action if counts are incorrect.
  • Ensures safe use of equipment and instrumentation before, during, and after surgery. Assists as needed under the surgeon's direction, holds retractors, anticipates equipment needs, and troubleshoots equipment.
  • Assists with patient care procedures, including specimen labeling, tapping mallet, suture cutting (licensed personnel), and surgical skin prep.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Completion of a nationally accredited surgical technologist program and maintenance of a CST credential from NBSTSA.

OR

  • Training in surgical technology from the U.S. military or Public Health Service.
  • Must be in good standing with NYS regulations.
  • BLS certification (preferred).
  • Ability to operate effectively in emergencies.
