Job summary

TCH Medical Center in Texas is seeking a Surgical Technologist II to support the operating room team. You will handle instruments, supplies, and equipment, assisting the physician during procedures and performing patient care duties as directed by the circulating nurse.

Candidates should have two years of surgical technologist experience and relevant CST-SUR/NCCT-TECH certifications. Responsibilities include OR preparation, aseptic technique, instrument counts, and adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care related duties during surgical procedures.
  • Prepares and assists with OR setup and instrumentation according to procedure and age appropriateness.
  • Maintains accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Assists with specimen labeling and handling.
  • Ensures patient safety and proper handling of medications within sterile field.

In this position, you willhandle instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure,assistingthe physician whileperforming related patient care duties in anage-appropriatemanner as assigned by the circulating nurse (RN).

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs patient care related duties.
  • Prepares andassistswith the preparation of the operating room according to the needs and age appropriateness of thepatient and the surgical procedure asevidencedby the following, but not limitedto:knowledge of surgical pathology asrelated to the planned surgical intervention; knowledge of allergies (awarenessofhigh-riskgroups for latex allergy);knowledge and preparation of special equipment i.e., implants, prostheses, instrumentation per procedure/preference,and medications.
  • Applies knowledge of surgical procedure byanticipatingthe surgeon's needs, having supplies opened or available in a cost-effective manner asobservedby the circulating nurse/nurse manager.Seeks the circulating nurse'sassistanceand references the preference card when unable to decide about opening versus readily available.
  • Attends andparticipatesinin-servicesand other continuing education opportunities tomaintainprofessional development.
  • Maintainscorrectcount of sponges, needles, and instruments according to the established policy and procedure 100% ofthe time asobservedby the circulating nurse.
  • Assistsin the care and labeling of specimens 100% of the time asobservedby the circulating nurse.
  • Acknowledges the importance of patient safety byparticipatingin the proper handling of medications within the sterilefield.
  • Prepares O.R. equipment and supplies while performing patientcare-relatedduties in anage-appropriatemanner.
  • Demonstrateseffective time management skills.
  • Cares for one or more of the following agegroups routinely: Neonates, Infants, Toddler,Preschool Age, School Age, Adolescent, and Adult.

Skills & Requirements
  • RequiredEducational program completion for surgicaltechnologists which may include operating room/surgical training completed in the army, navy, airforce, marine corps, or coast guard of the United Statesor in the United States Public Health Service
  • RequiredCST-SUR - Cert-Cert Surgical TECH by the National Board of Surgical Technology andSurgical Assisting andTSC-NCCT - Cert-TECH Surgery - Certified NCCT by the National Center for Competency Testing
  • Required2years' experienceas a surgical technologist andexperience in two or more surgical specialties
