Job summary

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC, seeks a skilled Surgical Technologist to serve as a scrub tech in the OR. You will assist with gowning, gloving, patient skin prep, draping, instrument handling, and counts under RN supervision.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist certification required.
  • 1 year experience as a surgical technologist preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge and use of aseptic technique while performing scrub duties.
  • Assist in carrying out patient care plans within scope of practice.
  • Serve as scrub technician in OR/procedure room under RN direction.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving other team members.
  • Prepare operating room and assist with skin prep and draping.
  • Handle specimens per facility policy and participate in instrument and needle counts.
  • Maintain sterilization equipment and stock supplies.
  • Support readiness of instruments and equipment for operative cases.

Responsible for the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes and to achieve the goals of the facility as direct by the Registered Nurse. Performs duties according to scope of practice designated by the facility position description, role and responsibilities and according to the surgical technician professional organization. May be assigned other functions as deemed necessary.Major Job FunctionsThe following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:Knows and follows aseptic technique when performing scrub duties and support duties for the department.Assists in carrying out the patient's plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice of the surgical technologists and according to the unit guidelines of care, facility policies and procedures, nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations.Functions as a surgical scrub technician in the operating room/procedure room under the direction of the Registered Nurse.Assists with gowning and gloving other members of the surgical team.Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures.Assists with skin preparations and with draping of patients.Handles specimens in accordance with facility policy and procedures.Participates in the final “Time Out” process in the OR or procedure room to verify the correct patient, the correct procedure, the correct site and if applicable, the correct side.Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for storage or processing.Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulation nurse.Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors.Assists with stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies.Helps to ensure that “specialty carts’, equipment, supplies, etc., are cleaned monthly, checked for outdates as needed.Terminally clean OR at the end of the day.Transports and escorts patients to various areas and for discharge.Assists with the maintenance, selection and preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases.Maintains confidentiality of all patient informationSupports patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the plan of care.Adjusts patient care based on the age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients.Participates in educational and performance improvement activities.Maintain educational requirements to keep certification status for Certified Surgical Techs.Other duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsThe following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:Education and Formal Training:High school graduate or equivalent requiredCertified Surgical Technologist certification requiredWork Experience:1 year experience as a surgical technologist preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English languageWorks with complex monitoring and life- saving equipmentKnowledge of Standard PrecautionsPosition involves skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materialDemonstrates knowledge of age-specific physiological/psychosocial/ developmental/ spiritual needs of patients typically servedDemonstrates self-directed learning and achievement of assigned clinical area objectivesPhysical Requirements:Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needsVisual acuity for observation of patientsLong periods of standing, walking, bending, and liftingMay involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious materialRequired Licenses and CertificationsCST - National Board Of Surgical Technology And Surgical AssistingCape Fear Valley Health System is an Equal Opportunity Employer M/F/Disability/Veteran/Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity
