Position: Surgical Technologist II (Operating Room Scrub Technician)

The Surgical Technologist II is responsible for setting up the sterile field, gathering supplies based on knowledge of instruments and equipment, and passing instruments to surgeons during surgery. This role also performs count procedures according to policy during surgical cases.

The Surgical Technologist II serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Technologists, takes call for routine and high-acuity cases after the orientation period, and learns, performs, and completes assigned responsibilities during the transitional duty period.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

• Registered by the State Board of Medicine
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C), or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST)

Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment:

• Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine
• Current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification
• Current CST, TS-C, or CORST

Experience:

• Required: Minimum of 2 years as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub technician
• Preferred: 3-5 years, with 2 years in a specific practice area

Education/Training:

• Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, military training, or LPN Program
• Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

Independent Actions:

Functions under RN or practitioner supervision, providing direct patient care, emotional support, and problem-solving in accordance with hospital policies. Requires prior approval for schedule changes, legal issues, and deviations from standard care.

Additional Requirements:

• Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays
• Participate in shift rotations and schedules established with the Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator
• Take independent call for routine or high-acuity cases after orientation
• Handle, transport, access medications and supplies as needed

Physical and Other Requirements:

• Lifting 50-100 lbs.
• Exposure to hazardous/infectious substances
• Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching
• Strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical reasoning
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment, handle multiple priorities, and adapt to change
