Description

Under the supervision of the Charge Nurse and/or Director of Surgical Services, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for assisting in the provision of nursing care and preparation of the surgical patient in the surgery department. Functions as a member of the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons. The Surgical Technologist will deliver care in accordance with age-specific categories (i.e., neo-natal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients).

Responsibilities (essential functions)
  • Provides patient care under the direction of the surgeon and registered nurse (RN).
  • Protects patients and team members by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Sets up and maintains sterile field.
  • Prepares the surgical suite and ensures all equipment, supplies, and instruments are ready for procedures.
  • Performs gowning, gloving, and draping for all surgical cases.
  • Maintains focus and anticipates the needs of the physician during procedures.
  • Performs systematic and organized counts; follows up on incorrect counts.
  • Cleans operating room and equipment per policies.
  • Prepares and transports surgical instruments to decontamination.
  • Assists in transporting patients as per departmental procedures.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and protects operations.
  • Continues professional and technical education through ongoing learning opportunities.
  • Communicates effectively within healthcare teams and participates in problem-solving.
  • Maintains punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Adapts care methods to meet individual patient needs, considering physical, cultural, and developmental factors.
  • Uses assistive devices for lifting as required.
  • Follows safety protocols at all times.
  • Meets all employment requirements, including vaccinations.
  • Undergoes respirator and fit testing when at risk for airborne infectious diseases.
  • Exhibits behaviors aligned with DRH core values and standards of behavior.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Fluent in English; basic computer skills; excellent communication skills; adaptable to urgent situations; able to use assistive devices for lifting; able to respond to call within 30 minutes.

Education and/or Experience: Completion of an accredited surgical technology program; certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting; previous surgical experience preferred.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: BLS certification from the American Heart Association required within 30 days of hire; valid driver’s license and insurance if travel is required.

Additional Information
  • This is a safety-sensitive position; cannot test positive for THC or other drugs during pre-employment or ongoing testing.
  • Requires respirator and fit testing for exposure to airborne hazards.
  • Vaccinations are required as per DRH policy, with exemptions available.
