Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Marlborough, MA is hiring a Surgical Technologist to handle instruments, supplies and equipment during procedures. You will anticipate surgeons’ needs, maintain sterile fields and assist in maintaining patient safety during operations.

Requirements include BLS and Surgical Technologist certification, graduation from an approved program, and strong dexterity with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Schedule includes on-call, day shift, 40 hours weekly.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program.
• Well organized with high manual dexterity; 3 years hospital surgical service experience preferred; strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and meds necessary for surgery.
• Check supplies and equipment needed for the procedure (scrubs, gowns, gloves).
• Perform instrument counts with circulator before incision and before wound closure.

I. PURPOSE & PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

The Surgical Tech handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

• Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure, such as scrubs, gowns and gloves.
• Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for surgery.
• Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.

II. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

• Licensure/Certification/Registration: BLS Certification, Surgical Technologist certification required.
• Education: Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program.
• Other Qualifications: Well organized and possess high degree of manual dexterity; 3 years experience in a hospital-based surgical service preferred; Excellent interpersonal, organizational, customer service and communication skills required or equal combination of the above.
