Virginia Urology will provide access to individualized, quality, and compassionate urological care from a highly specialized and diverse teams while maintaining a fulfilling work environment.

Overall Objective

The Certified Surgical Technologist will demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and care appropriate to patients served. They will function as the scrub person during the operative procedures, maintaining aseptic and a safe environment in the Operating Room. This role assists in the intra-operative care of the patient by performing technical duties as assigned and services the following populations: adult and geriatric.

Principal Activities And Expected End Results
  • Routinely functions in the scrub role on assigned cases. Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently implements sterile technique.
  • Assists in the preparation of the operating room and performs assign support duties during surgical procedures. Assists team members in selecting and preparing routine supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Checks all instruments to ensure proper working order prior to usage, displays knowledge of routinely used instruments and contents of sets.
  • Performs surgical hand scrub according to the procedure. Gowns and gloves self and others in accordance with gowning and gloving procedure.
  • Opens instruments trays following basic aseptic technique policy and procedure. Inspects sterilization indicators. Notifies circulators of missing or malfunctioning instruments and any suspect sterility.
  • Sets up instrument stand and table with drapes, sutures, power tools, and other instruments in accordance with the operating surgeon’s preference list.
  • Opens and sets up drape pack, following aseptic technique. Assists First Assistant or surgeon in draping patient to establish the sterile field. Does so in accordance with AORN Standards and Recommended Practices and established departmental policies.
  • Maintains and performs a count of sponges, sharps and instruments according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provides and anticipates the needs and requests of the surgeon. Ensures that appropriate instrumentation and supplies, are readily available in the room or on the sterile field.
  • Handles specimens in accordance with acceptable infection control guidelines and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Shares responsibility for patient safety at all times. Maintains an environment that is free of obstacles and hazards that could result in injuries to personnel and patients.
  • Participates in room turnover procedures to include set-up and clean-up protocols.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of clinical excellence, operational effectiveness and patient-centered care.
Requirements

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Completion of a Surgical Technology program or equivalent work experience as surgical technologist for a period of at least 2+ years in which the following has been learned: Sterile technique, knowledge of surgical instruments, basic knowledge of aseptic technique
  • Maintains current CPR certification
  • CST certification required
  • Registered with the Virginia Department of Health Professions

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the life span
  • Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status
  • Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her specific needs
  • Provides care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures
  • Maintain CPR Certification

Prior Work Experience

Prior experience in a hospital or, ambulatory center, or specialty procedural setting assisting with surgical case preparation, sterile field setup, instrumentation and room turnover.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move quickly between OR rooms during cases and turnovers.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance, and move, position, or assist patients and equipment in accordance with safe patient handling guidelines.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, kneel, and twist while preparing rooms, and accessing supplies/equipment.
  • Manual dexterity to handle surgical instruments, maintain sterile technique and pass instruments accurately.
  • Ability to clearly see the surgical field, distinguish instruments, read labels and monitor, and respond to team communication as well as alarms in a fast-paced environment.
Other Information
  • Other Job functions Include: Assists the RN and other members of the surgical team in the proper positioning of patients, including protection of pressure points, and proper body alignment.
  • Identifies and transports patients as needed, assists with shaving the operative site when indicated.
  • Participates in the on-going correction and updating of physician preference cards. Communicates changes to the appropriate service coordinator/supervisor. Provides documentation assistance as requested.
  • Regularly assists in the orientation and training of other personnel.
  • Attends continuing education including but not limited to: Safety, Infection Control, Disaster preparedness, code reviews, fire safety, IVCS and MH, radiation safety and document attendance on continuing education worksheet. The updated yearly worksheet will be located in the personnel file at the time of evaluation. These continuing education sessions can be in the form of in-services, online training and testing, handouts, etc.
  • Exhibits strong initiative, personal accountability, and ability to independently identify and execute improvement opportunities.

This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, and will work Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
