Job description

The Certified Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting the surgeon during the operating phase by passing instruments, draping, maintaining the sterile field, and assisting nursing staff in preparing the OR for scheduled surgeries.


Job Relationships


Reports to the applicable Manager.


Principal Responsibilities

  1. Prepare and set up for surgical cases.
  2. Open packs, trays, instruments, and sterile supplies for the surgical procedure, maintaining sterile conditions.
  3. Count sponges, needles, and instruments with the circulating nurse according to Policy and Procedure Manual.
  4. Break down and clean OR rooms after each procedure.
  5. Check and maintain supplies at the end of scheduled cases.
  6. Update surgeon preference cards.
  7. Scrub and assist the physician during surgeries.
  8. Assist nursing staff as needed.
  9. Assist with cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of instruments and equipment.
  10. Report equipment repair needs to the supervisor.
  11. Complete annual competencies for the specific working area within the designated month.
  12. Follow Springfield Clinic incident reporting policies and procedures.
  13. Adhere to OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishment requirements.
  14. Provide excellent customer service and adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  1. Graduate from an OR technician program or equivalent training.
  2. Previous OR technician experience preferred, with at least two years.

Licenses/Certificates

  1. CST Certification in Illinois.
  2. CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines required within 30 days of hire.
