POSITION SUMMARY

The Surgery Center Operating Room Scrub Technician assists the surgical team during surgical and invasive procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse. The Technician provides direct patient care as a scrub/instrument person during surgery. Duties include arranging the operating room for surgical procedures by ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly. The technician prepares and maintains the sterile field by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using proper aseptic technique. The Technician anticipates the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology related to the surgical procedure and assists with moving and positioning the patient as directed by the perioperative registered nurse.

This position delivers care promptly and professionally, maintaining the highest level of confidentiality and respect. The Technician works as part of the care team to meet customer needs and support departmental objectives. The Technician provides quality customer service, participates in performance improvement efforts, and takes responsibility for professional growth and development.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an accredited surgical technology program is required.
• Completes 15 hours of continuing education to remain certified in NJ.
• Specialty Experience: Advanced Certification required.
• Preferred: Surgery Center experience (not required). Proficiency in Clinical Applications is preferred at hire; training will be provided, with skill expected within 30-60 days.
• Must meet one of the following criteria:
• Completion of an accredited surgical technology program or hold and maintain a certified Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification.
• Completed an appropriate military training program for surgical technology.
• Provided evidence of employment practicing surgical technology before August 2012.
• Actively serving as a surgical technologist in the US government.
• BLS certification required upon hire or transfer.
• Certified Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Demonstrates competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential exposure to hospital hazards such as infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous waste, and injury. Requires standing, reaching, walking, and the ability to lift up to 60 lbs. Must have good hand/eye coordination, finger/hand dexterity, visual and hearing acuity, and the ability to maintain retraction for extended periods.
