- Assist in care of patients of all ages before, during and after surgical procedures
- Perform scrub duties and related functions as a member of the surgical team
- Maintain patient safety, privacy and confidentiality
- Comply with legal aspects of patient care
- Comply with sterilization standards and standards for handling sharps or contaminated instruments
- Participate in quality improvement activities
- Prepare for surgical procedures by collecting necessary supplies and instruments according to Surgeon Preference Card
- Prepare the Operating Room by opening sterile supplies, setting up tables, and arranging instruments and supplies
- Assist the surgical team during operative procedures
- Maintain correct counts of instruments, needles and sponges
- Identify and care for specimens
- Handle drugs and solutions under RN direction
- Clean and prepare rooms between procedures and terminally clean at the end of the day
- Return unused supplies, instruments and extra equipment to proper storage
- Maintain aseptic techniques and correct breaches
- Complete annual age-specific accountabilities
Requirements
- Job-related course work beyond high school: Diploma in Surgical Technology
- No previous experience required
- CST certification with NBSTSA
- NCCT certification accepted if ST was employed as an ST in South Carolina prior to January 1, 2008, or completed a ST military training program
- In lieu of the education requirement: current mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education and either employment as an ST in South Carolina prior to January 1, 2008 or completion of a ST military training program
- Grandfathered team members must be certification eligible and obtain required certification within one year
- Basic computer skills
- Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)
- Completion of 15 hours of mandatory ST education annually
- Maintenance of surgical technology certification
