JOB SUMMARY

The Surgical Assistant, under the surgeon's supervision, utilizes medical knowledge, education, training, and experience in surgical anatomy, physiology, aseptic techniques, instrumentation, and surgical psychomotor skills to assist in surgical procedures. The certified surgical assistant may also serve as a preceptor for training Surgical Assistants and act as a resource for OR staff.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an AMA-approved Physician Assistant (PA) program with certification and Illinois licensure, or medical education and training as a physician (unlicensed), or a Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA), certified by the American Board of Surgical Assistants or the National Surgical Assistant Association. CPR certification is required.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS (INTERNAL/EXTERNAL)

May serve as a resource to surgeons, surgical services, or departments in training healthcare professionals, students, and physicians on behalf of Resilience Healthcare. Adjusts patient interactions and treatments to match age-specific developmental, educational, or other needs.

Pay Rate: $35 - $45 per hour

JOB DUTIES

Demonstrates Resilience Healthcare's Customer Service Values, essential for providing quality service to patients and customers.

  1. Assist the surgeon with duties such as retracting for exposure, reflecting tissue, cutting sutures and tissue as directed, harvesting veins, assisting with wound closure, and securing drains and dressings under supervision.
  2. Prepare the surgical patient, including urinary catheterization, surgical preparation, and draping of the operative field, maintaining the integrity of the operative field.
  3. Handle and manipulate surgical equipment, including laparoscopic or minimally invasive technology, to facilitate surgical procedures.
  4. Demonstrate and teach healthcare professionals, students, and surgeons to use surgical equipment proficiently, under surgeon supervision.
  5. Prepare the operating room for surgery or between cases, assist nursing staff with patient positioning, supplies, and equipment to ensure safe patient care in the operating suite.
