Job summary

AdventHealth in Shawnee Mission, KS, seeks a Surgical First Assistant to support operative procedures with emphasis on aseptic technique, instrument handling, and patient safety. You will collaborate closely with surgeons, nursing staff, and anesthesia, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities include preparing suites, assisting with hemostasis, wound closures, and ensuring proper counts and documentation. Requires CST/CSFA-type credentials and relevant experience.

Qualifications

• Ability to prepare surgical suites with appropriate instruments, resources, and supplies based on surgeon preference cards
• Knowledge of instruments, supplies, and equipment utilized for surgical procedures
• Understanding of the procedures being performed and ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon
• Strong physician/surgeon relationship skills and team mentality
• Up-to-date knowledge of patient rights and ability to respect cultural, psychosocial, and spiritual values
• Up-to-date knowledge of applicable regulatory, compliance, and accreditation standards and requirements
• Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals
• Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Previous first assistant experience related to the area of specialty
• Knowledge of Anatomy
• General knowledge of asepsis, healing, infectious disease process, surgical anatomy and physiology, safety issues, and operative techniques
• Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Course
• Completion of Certified Surgical First Assisting Program

Responsibilities

• Sets up operating suites according to surgeon preferences.
• Determines suitable surgical equipment and supplies.
• Aids in achieving hemostasis during procedures.
• Assists with wound closures and drainage systems.
• Provides visualization for operative sites via tissue manipulation and suction.
• Handles instruments and anticipates surgeon needs.
• Assists with patient positioning and safety.
• Maintains strict aseptic technique and performs hand scrubs.
• Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
• Participates in site verification and time-out procedures.
• Transfers medications and irrigation solutions per policy.
• Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization.
• Performs other duties as assigned
