Job summary

ProMedica is seeking a Certified Surgical Assistant for Toledo Hospital's Cardiac Surgery team. The role involves assisting the primary surgeon, transporting patients, positioning, and aiding anesthesia during induction and post-procedure transport to PACU or ICU.

You will ensure correct equipment placement, manage surgical instruments, and participate in closing wound layers and marking sites, with active involvement in follow-up rounds. Certification maintenance is required.

Qualifications

  • Graduated from NSAA approved program and NCCSA credentialing exam.
  • Regular continuing medical education to maintain certification is expected.
  • Excellent knowledge of sepsis, infection control, and surgical instrument handling.

Job description

Certified Surgical Assistant - Toledo Hospital - Cardiac Surgery

As a Certified Surgical Assistant, you will work with the primary Surgeon to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care delivered to patients of all ages undergoing surgery.

You will assist with patient transport, positioning and help anesthesia personnel during induction and post-procedure transport to PACU or ICU.

You will ensure the proper equipment selection and placement of x-rays, drainage tubes and surgical devices needed for surgery. You will also help with closing wound layers, marking surgical sites and participating in follow-up rounds.

Job Requirements
  • Education: Graduated from a program approved by the NSAA (National Surgical Assistant Association), and The NCCSA (National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants).
  • Skills: Excellent motor, eye-hand coordination, and manipulative skills. Ability to implement a knowledgeable, ski ll fu l , and consistent plan of care in collaboration with the primary surgeon meeting the distinct requirements of the patient's age and physical needs. Possesses technical and clinical skills and knowledge required of the specific clinical specialty in which they are engaged. Knowledge of sepsis and infection control. Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment / the ability to assemble necessary supplies, equipment, and instrumentation for expected surgical procedures based on patient's age and physical needs. Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions. Knowledge of surgical positions and positioning devices. Ability to establish priorities to meet changing needs of patient . In-depth knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology related to surgical patients and procedures. Working knowledge of Pharmacology related to surgical drugs and their administration.
  • Years of Experience: No prior work experience is required , provided that the Non-Physician Surgical Assistant (CSA) has been actively engaged in his/her clinical education program immediately (within 3 months) prior to application for medical staff privileges.
  • Certification: Successfully pass the NCCSA credentialing exam for the Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA). Complete appropriate continuing medical education in order to maintain certification. BCLS.
