  • Recognizes possible adverse reactions during the procedure and acts to mitigate risk.
  • Verifies correct surgical site with the surgeon prior to incision.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient safety standards per regulatory guidance.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and essential manual skills to assist the surgeon.
  • Adheres to aseptic technique to prevent infection and promote wound healing.
  • Performs delegated medical functions within CSA scope of practice.
  • Uses instruments to assist the surgeon and expose the operative site.
  • Maintains safe tissue handling and promotes hemostasis.
  • Partners with the surgeon to direct perioperative care.
  • Serves as educator and resource to patients and staff.
  • Adheres to state/facility practice standards and documents interventions promptly.
  • Shows flexibility across the Patient Care Services Department as needed.
  • Participates in staff meetings and departmental updates at regular intervals.
  • Keeps current with hospital policies and guidelines.

General Summary:

A Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) is an advanced allied health professional who directly assists surgeons during operations, including tissue retraction, hemostasis, suturing, and wound closure. They maintain a sterile field and anticipate the surgeon's needs, working in hospitals or surgical centers under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon. The Certified Surgical Assistant Division Coordinator is a CSA who assumes accountability for assigned specialty surgical responsibilities, including the following tasks: supply and implant acquisition and inventory control; instrumentation; equipment training and troubleshooting; and maintaining surgeon preference cards and charges. They work collaboratively to coordinate appropriate pre-admission screening, pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care with surgical technologist specialists, registered nurses, charge nurses, other departments, and physician office staff. This individual works closely with specialty-specific physicians and operating room staff to promote teamwork, excellent patient care, and effectiveness and efficiency of operating room processes. Reviews upcoming surgical schedules for potential conflicts related to instrumentation, personnel, special equipment, or ancillary services to efficiently manage resources. They actively participate in orientation and educational offerings with staff, therefore, requiring highly specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills used in the Operating Room and in accordance with the Recommended Standards and Practices of AORN.

Responsibilities:

  • Is cognizant of and can recognize possible adverse reactions patients may experience during the surgical procedure.
  • Along with the surgeon and OR Team present in the room, assumes accountability for verification of the correct surgical site immediately prior to the incision.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient safety standards published by regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise.
  • Possesses the essential mental discipline and fine motor skills to provide technical assistance to the surgeon.
  • Strictly adheres to principles of aseptic techniques to prevent infection and promote optimal wound healing.
  • Accepts appropriate delegated medical functions as defined within the CSA scope of practice.
  • Uses surgical instruments to assist the surgeon and facilitate surgical intervention.
  • Handles tissue safely. Provides exposure of the operative site to promote a safe and effective surgical procedure.
  • Promotes and maintains hemostasis. Assist with and/or perform wound closure.
  • Partners with the surgeon to collaboratively direct the patient’s perioperative course.
  • Serves as educator, mentor, consultant, and resource to patients, colleagues, other health care professionals, and the community.
  • Base professional and practice behaviors on the knowledge and application of the scope of practice as defined by the state, professional practice standards, and facility guidelines to practice.
  • Recognizes, assures documentation of, and in a timely and accurate fashion, any interventions when a patient’s condition indicates an emerging problem.
  • Understands the need to be flexible within the Patient Care Services Department; assigned wherever the need arises up to own level of competency.
  • Participates in staff meetings, case conferences, and departmental meetings at a minimum 8 times per year.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of hospital and departmental policies, adheres to them, and references the manuals as necessary to comply with current practice standards.
  • All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED Certificate Program ; Surgical First Assistant
  • Credential(s): Certified Surgical Assistant Basic Life Support
  • Or Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA)
  • Experience: Required: At least 2 years of current working clinical experience and an in-depth understanding of servicing the specific specialty area(s), as Certified Surgical Assist
