Under the leadership of the Surgical Services Nurse Manager, demonstrates competency in identification, decontamination, processing and sterilization of surgical instruments. Has a thorough understanding of processing and sterilization of surgical instruments. Has a thorough understanding of processing equipment, including but not limited to, sterilizers, washer decontaminators and ultrasonic cleaner following a detailed orientation.
- Demonstrates independent function in ensuring proper operation within the department: communication, problem solving, and equipment testing, set up and maintenance of critical and non-critical supplies.
- Demonstrates independent function in ensuring that soiled instruments and equipment is decontaminated in a manner that prevents cross contamination.
- Demonstrates independent function in ensuring a sterile product by properly assembling items and using appropriate packaging product in preparation of terminal sterilization.
- Demonstrates independent function in ensuring sterility and high level disinfection are achieved by following the appropriate procedure.
- Demonstrates function in maintaining inventory and appropriate storage of sterile and sanitized items ready for distribution to various departments upon request.
