Our Sterile Processing Department is a critical unit responsible for the lifecycle management of medical instruments and equipment. Responsible for providing clean, properly packaged, sterile instruments and supplies to meet individual customer needs.
Responsibilities
- Assessment: Reviews surgical schedule to identify patient and procedure needs. Monitors instrument and reprocessing equipment functions using mechanical, chemical, and biological monitors.
- Planning: Collaborates with Clinical Coordinators, Inventory Control Specialists, and OR Desk Coordinators to ensure availability of instruments. Monitors daily surgical schedule progress to identify additional needs. Prioritizes and organizes work based on customer needs.
- Processing: Utilizes PPE to minimize exposure to hazardous materials and contaminated waste. Disassembles all complex instrumentation. Sorts, cleans, and inspects all contaminated instruments from operating rooms and other hospital areas following manufacturer and department standards. Reassembles instrument sets using count sheets and/or lists. Packages items for sterilization and sterilizes reusable instruments. Operates and monitors reprocessing equipment, maintains records of all sterilizer functions, and cleans equipment per manufacturer instructions.
- Coordination: Utilizes resources judiciously and cost‑effectively. Assists in inventory and maintenance of instruments and supplies. Participates in process improvement and new personnel orientation.
- Communication: Keeps co‑workers and intra‑operative staff informed of updates or issues. Collaborates with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues.

Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
- Experience: Two years in a hospital Sterile Reprocessing Department, required.
- Licensure/Certification: Sterile Reprocessing Tech certification, required. CBSPD, CRCST, or CSPDT, required.
- Skills: Complete competency testing; demonstrate knowledge of instrumentation, sterile/aseptic technique; read and comprehend written instructions for assembly; understand medical terminology; maintain Sterile Processing Technician certification.
- Schedule: Must be able to work both 1st and 2nd shift.
- Transportation: Must have reliable transportation; float between the 9 coastal facilities.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough records with attention to detail.
