Job summary

MUSC Health in Charleston, SC seeks a Certified SPD Supervisor to oversee daily operations of the Sterile Processing Department, coordinating instrument production, case assembly, and decontamination in accordance with policies and regulatory requirements.

The role reports to the Manager of Sterile Processing and provides leadership to staff while serving as a liaison with other departments and participating in quality initiatives to meet organizational goals.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be certified in sterile processing and as an instrument specialist (IAHCSMM).
  • 2+ years of sterile processing experience.
  • SPD leadership/management certification to be obtained within 6 months if not held.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily SPD department operations and staff.
  • Coordinate instrument production, case assembly, sterilization, and decontamination.
  • Ensure compliance with MUSC policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Job Description Summary

The Certified SPD Supervisor reports to the Manager, Sterile Processing. Under general supervision of the department manager, the Certified SPD supervisor coordinates and manages the daily activities and operational needs of the department. This position assists the Manager with the overall direction, leadership, and supervision of the staff. This role performs instrument production, case assembly, sterile processing, and decontamination of surgical instruments in compliance with medical center policies and procedures, state, local and federal requirements. This position serves as SPD liaison with other departments. The Certified SPD Supervisor monitors and participates in quality initiatives and assists with accomplishing organizational and department goals/objectives. Supervisors may have supervisory responsibilities at Main, Rutledge Tower, and/or ART Sterile Processing Departments.

Qualifications

Graduate of high school or GED equivalency examination and must be certified and maintain a certification in sterile processing and as an instrument specialist from IAHCSMM. Must have at least 2 years’ experience in sterile processing. Certification in SPD leadership or management from IAHCSMM must be obtained within 6 months if not already held. Possess ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, basic computer skills, work in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure healthcare environment, and leadership, supervisory or management experience preferred.
