Job Description

The Certified Respiratory Therapist participates in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders. Responsible for managing Life Support systems and responding to medical emergencies within the hospital. The CRT may perform all tasks included in their license practice act within department guidelines and policies. The position relies on education and entry-level training to complete responsibilities. The CRT must function with limited supervision, relying on their education and the guidance of physicians and supervisory staff.

Responsibilities
  1. Compliance/Quality
  2. Check patient records for orders prior to each treatment.
  3. Explain procedures thoroughly to each patient to ensure cooperation and compliance.
  4. Understand ventilator management comprehensively.
  5. Select interventions appropriate to the patient's age and growth level when planning care.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and oxygen devices used in Respiratory Care.
  7. Adhere to hospital policy regarding Paid Time Off and Extended Illness Time.
  8. Report to work on time and communicate tardiness to the appropriate personnel.
  9. Conform to regulatory, customer, and organizational requirements.
  10. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriately for personal protection.
  11. Follow infection control practices.
  12. Complete required TB skin tests.
  13. Perform patient assessments and implement care plans, including routine and special procedures.
  14. Check ventilator orders before making changes.
  15. Administer therapy according to department policies, perform checks, document, and monitor oxygen concentration and cuff pressure as required.
  16. Measure ventilator parameters daily and document on the ventilator flow sheet.
  17. Provide patient assessments based on clinical data.
  18. Perform comprehensive patient assessments at each shift's start and document findings.
  19. Implement care plans to meet therapeutic objectives.
  20. Perform EKGs, complete requisitions, and tracings as per departmental policies and procedures.
  21. Communicate effectively with team members, utilizing the chain of command for problem solving and improvements.
  22. Ensure patients, guests, and co-workers feel welcomed and respected, treating everyone with dignity and sensitivity to cultural and religious differences.
  23. Adjust personal schedule as needed to meet department requirements.
  24. Maintain professionalism through appearance and ongoing education.
  25. Attend mandatory educational sessions and pursue continuous professional development.
  26. Respond appropriately to fire, safety, and disaster situations.
  27. Accept additional work assignments as directed by supervisors.
Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree or equivalent (10 years of experience as a licensed therapist may substitute).

Training: Graduate of an AMA-approved program.

Special Skills: Successful completion of the NBRC national certification exam.
