The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist provides anesthesia services for surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patients of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The CRNA is an integral part of the Physician Anesthesiologist / CRNA Anesthesia Care Team. CRNA’s involvement in providing anesthesia services includes pre-anesthesia evaluation and preparation, anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence and post anesthesia care. The CRNA also provides clinical support services, administrative services and educational support.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Administers safe anesthesia - Reviews and discusses the anesthesia plan in collaboration with other anesthesia providers. Select and use all equipment, invasive and noninvasive monitors, supplies, and drugs for the administration of sedation, anesthesia, and pain management services; perform safety checks as needed. Monitor all equipment being used on patient during procedure. Records complete and accurate anesthesia records via EMR. Ensures patient’s stability prior to transporting patient to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. Informs personnel and supervising Physician Anesthesiologist of all pertinent information. Collaborates with supervisors and/or managers of other departments to analyze and resolve patient issues. Inserts intravenous/intra-arterial catheters. Selects appropriate anesthesia technique and administers analgesic and anesthetic agents, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, fluids, or blood products necessary to provide anesthesia services. Manage emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids, and using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Performs pre-operative and post-operative evaluations - Completes pre-op evaluations. Documents thoroughly via EMR all information for pre-operative evaluation. Review, request, and order all laboratory/diagnostic studies. Confers with Clinical Director Anesthesiologist on all data that is out of the ordinary or a potential problem. Develop and implement an anesthesia care plan. Discusses plan of anesthesia with patient, surgeon and supervising physician anesthesiologist and documents on the pre anesthesia record. Maintains familiarity with regional anesthesia techniques to include medication dosage and maintenance. Evaluate the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery; take appropriate corrective action during the post-anesthesia period.
  • Plans and directs in-service educational and Divisional Orientation Programs. Presents in-services to other hospital personnel as requested. Participates in research and presents findings and in-services to department and other hospital personnel. Directs orientations and preceptorships for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist (SRNA’s), CRNA’s and anesthesia technicians.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing is required.
  • Graduate of a Nurse Anesthesia program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs.
  • ACLS, PALS.

Minimum Experience:

  • Pediatric CRNA experience preferred.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law:

  • (LC: NBCRNA) Certification by National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists. Recertification every two years by The Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • (LC: RN-TN) Must possess a current Tennessee State Board of Nursing license if primary residence is Tennessee or a Nurse Licensure Non-Compact state. (LC: RN-ARK or RN-MISS) Must possess a current State Board of Nursing license in the state of primary residence if the state is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.
  • (LC: APN-TN) Must possess a current Advanced Practice Nurse License issued by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing.

Compensation: In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $151,840 - $287,040 per year for the role of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
