Job summary

Novant Health seeks an experienced medical coder to join our Revenue Cycle team. The role involves on-site coding support with monthly clinic visits to Charlotte and Winston-Salem, NC, applying CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS guidelines to ensure accurate and timely billing.

You will review and code work queues, query providers for clarifications, educate providers, and monitor coding accuracy. Strong communication and self-audit skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • Licensure: CPC-A, CPC, CCS-P, COC, CMC, RHIA or RHIT required.
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • 2+ years of healthcare experience with at least 1 year of professional coding
  • Working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS
  • Effective communication with patients, physicians, staff, and administration
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal skills; able to work independently
  • Ability to perform self-audits and understand revenue cycle impact

Responsibilities

  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, daytime hours; on-site visits to clinics in NC area.
  • Review and code work queues using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS principles.
  • Query providers for clarification and monitor timely responses.
  • Provide provider education on ICD-10 and coding accuracy.
  • Identify front-end and back-end error trends for training needs.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and revenue cycle initiatives.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of sequencing and CMS guidelines.

What You’ll Do
  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, daytime hours.
  • Perform monthly on-site visits to assigned clinics in the Charlotte or Winston-Salem, NC areas.
  • Review and code work queues assigned by applying coding principles for correct coding including sequencing.
  • Query providers for clarification of incomplete or ambiguous documentation as appropriate and monitor for timely responses.
  • Provide provider education and regular feedback on ICD-10 and correct coding issues.
  • Evaluate and identify front-end and back-end error trends for training needs and bring them to the attention of the coding manager.
  • Communicate and participate in departmental meetings and initiatives involving coding and the revenue cycle enhancement process.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of all procedures concerning the sequencing of diagnoses, procedures such as but not limited to those outlined in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and CMS guidelines.
What We’re Looking For
  • Licensure: CPC-A, CPC, CCS-P, COC, CMC, RHIA, or RHIT credentials are required.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of healthcare experience with at least 1 year of professional coding experience.
  • Working knowledge of Current Procedure Technology and Terminology (CPT), ICD-10 CM, and HCPCS coding.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with patients, physicians, staff, and administration.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to perform self-audit of work and awareness of the impact on revenue cycle.
Preferred
  • 2+ years of medical terminology experience and customer service experience in a clinic setting.
  • Direct provider communication experience.
