Job summary

Colonial Heights Police Department accepts applications for Certified Police Officer positions from Virginia-certified officers or CPREP-eligible candidates through Crater Criminal Justice Academy. Requirements include US citizenship, at least 21, high school diploma or GED, Virginia license, and passing a comprehensive selection process with physical and background checks.

Qualifications

• Virginia certified Police Officer or CPREP eligibility
• U.S. citizenship (VA Code 15.2-1705,i)
• 21 years of age or older
• Graduated from accredited high school or GED; college coursework in criminal justice/police science desirable
• 3 years related experience or equivalent education/experience
• Valid Virginia operator's license
• Physically fit as determined by physician
• 20/20 or better vision in each eye
• Good character and reputation
• No felony conviction or plea
• No positive pre-employment drug screen
• Pass all phases of police selection (written, agility, background, polygraph, psych, medical, drug screening)
• Ability to obtain public safety certifications within specified time frame

Responsibilities

• Enforces the law, criminal investigations, traffic regulation and control
• Provides emergency and other services
• Responds to and investigates criminal activity
• Performs patrol duties
• Responds to calls for service
• Serves warrants and assists in civil matters
• Develops, distributes, and files reports
• Operates electronic equipment in traffic enforcement
• Testifies in court
• Addresses public inquiries
• Other duties as assigned
• The work requires strenuous physical exertion including frequent climbing and lifting objects over 74 pounds
• Work environment includes high risks with exposure to life-threatening situations requiring safety precautions
