Job summary

UnityPoint Health-St Luke's is seeking a Part-Time Physical Therapist Assistant to work 2 days per week with rotating weekends/holidays in the Rehab-I/P Hospital setting. The PTA provides selected therapeutic interventions under the supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist and ensures accurate documentation and communication to support the plan of care.

Responsibilities include performing treatments, documenting progress for physicians and the care team, maintaining safety and infection

Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Program required.
  • License/Certifications: Current licensure in the state of Iowa and in good standing. Must possess and maintain BLS certification or obtain within 3 months from date of hire.
  • Stroke education: 4 hours prior to end of orientation and annually.

Responsibilities

  • Performs treatment/intervention as outlined by supervising Physical Therapist.
  • Utilizes appropriate PT interventions to produce desired outcomes.
  • Documents and bills to communicate progress to physicians and third‑party payers.
  • Works within supervision guidelines per state licensure laws.
  • Maintains safety and infection control.
  • Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies as PTA.

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is responsible for administering therapeutic interventions selected by and under the direction and supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist, and within the scope of the profession, the State Practice Act, Licensure and policies of UnityPoint Health for Physical Therapist Assistants. The Physical Therapist Assistant is responsible for accurate documentation and billing as well as maintaining communication with the supervising Physical Therapist to inform a plan of care best suited for the environment in which care is provided (i.e.: acute hospital, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, in the home, etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Performs treatment/intervention as outlined by supervising Physical Therapist to gain expected outcomes based on patient/client goals, including a collaborative approach with patient/family and healthcare team.
  • Utilizes appropriate Physical Therapy interventions to produce desired outcomes.
  • Utilizes appropriate documentation and billing to communicate progress and status to physicians, other healthcare professionals and third‑party reimbursement.
  • Works within supervision guidelines of a Physical Therapist Assistant in accordance with state licensure laws.
  • Utilizes critical thinking, maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
  • Able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies of a physical therapist assistant.
  • Keeps work area and equipment clean and orderly by maintaining and practicing hospital and departmental policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control.
Development & Patient Education
  • Performs as a member of the Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication and quality assurance programs and meetings.
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance therapy practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assesses and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient/family needs including age, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential and actual concerns immediately.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Program required.
  • License/Certifications: Current licensure in the state of Iowa and in good standing to practice. Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or obtain certification within three months from date of hire.
  • Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually.
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused.
  • Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
