Job summary

Torrance Memorial is seeking a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I to join the Outreach Patient Services team. You will collect and prepare blood specimens for analysis, label samples, and coordinate with the lab to ensure specimen integrity.

The role requires attention to infection control and accurate clerical tasks. You will perform venipunctures on adults and pediatric patients, maintain clear communication with patients, and help keep the front desk and lab processes running smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • Collects blood specimens from adult and pediatric patients.
  • Performs venipuncture using various devices and ensures specimen quality.
  • Communicates with patients and staff using appropriate SBAR handoffs.
  • Reviews physician orders for completeness and processes intake in the revenue cycle system.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and follows privacy policies.
  • Supports performance improvement activities when appropriate.

Description

Under general direction of the Supervisor of Outreach Patient Services, the Certified Phlebotomy Technician I works cooperatively with all team members in performing all tasks related to registration, collection and preparation of blood specimens for analysis.



Core Competencies


  • Identifies, collects and labels blood specimens according to procedures.

  • Utilizes various venipuncture devices.

  • Adheres to infection control guidelines: uses good handwashing technique, adheres to isolation policy, cleaning equipment between patients.

  • Performs blood specimen collection for adult patients.

  • Performs blood specimen collection for pediatric and infant patients.

  • Ensures communication is appropriate to the age and status of the patient.

  • Prioritize and coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.

  • Performs up to 6 venipunctures per hour.

  • Meets practice standard for specimen quality (hemodialysis, clotted and QNS specimen rates).

  • Performs clerical and computer-related documentation accurately.

  • Ensures quality specimen draws by contacting Lab if unsure of specimen requirement and follows pre-analytic processes for specimen stability.

  • Uses the appropriate hand off communication techniques (SBAR) when appropriate.

  • Reviews notification tools in the department daily to stay current with changes and issues. Reviews e-mail and responds as needed.

  • Demonstrates an active problem-solving attitude and positive approach to all aspects of job.

  • Maintains safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.

  • Participates in hospital performance improvement activities (kaizens, lean initiatives) when appropriate.

  • Maintains patients’ rights by ensuring that all patients are provided with the patient rights documents and by maintaining patient confidentiality, privacy and security.

  • Reviews physician order for completeness to ensure compliance during intake process.

  • Collects all required data elements to complete the intake process within the hospital revenue cycle system.

  • Uses the Admitting/ Financial System for the following functions: Admitting, Resolving insurance issues, Billing Credits.

  • Maintains basic working knowledge of all sponsored programs such as Medicare, Medi-Cal, Tricare and all other payers; as well as contracted insurance payers and authorization requirements.

  • Validates patient eligibility, benefits, and medical group affiliation as well as obtaining insurance verification and notification as needed. Validation may be performed via the telephone, payer website, or hospital registration application.

  • Maintains proficient working knowledge of Medicare Secondary Payor Questionnaire policy and procedures.

  • Performs the following functions in LIS: Enters test requests, provides test results, processes specimens

  • Performs general office/receptionist functions: Answers incoming calls: Takes verbal orders, provides patient results, forwards calls to appropriate party or laboratory section, answers patient questions, ensures that the lobby is well maintained. maintains printers, copiers and fax machines. inventory control for the Front Office

$24.00 - $31.26 / Hour
