Job Objective:
Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Phlebotomy/Processing Supervisor and the Laboratory Assistant Director, the Certified Phlebotomist II performs various duties associated with specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing. Duties include venipuncture and capillary draws, specimen handling, maintaining supplies, equipment operation, answering questions related to specimens and testing, and assisting with the training new phlebotomists.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Certified Phlebotomist II
Collects laboratory specimens and performs venipuncture and capillary sticks on patientsAssists with the processing of laboratory specimensOrganizes laboratory orders by priority and specimen type for proper collection and handling of specimensOperates the LIS and HIS as required for the positionFollows proper isolation techniquesSafely and effectively uses all necessary equipmentCleans laboratory equipment, work surfaces and glasswareReceives and stocks suppliesRecords temperatures and notifies appropriate Clinical Laboratory Scientist of out-of-range valuesAnswers questions regarding test orders, specimen requirements and specimen availabilityDemonstrates proper use of scripting techniquesParticipates in Continuing Education for personal growth and maintenance of certificates and licensesAssures completion of all yearly competency testingAssists in training new phlebotomistsDemonstrates competence with computer downtime proceduresAbility to perform at least 10 draws per hour of average complexityNon-Essential Duties:
- Helps distribute supplies to other departments as needed
- Transports specimens and supplies between the main hospital lab and satellite locations
- Adds support to other laboratory staff as necessary

- High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required
Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
- Possession of a current Certified Phlebotomy Technician I orIIlicense issued by the State of California Department of Public Health

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform duties in a normal hospital clinical laboratory environment
