Title: Certified Phlebotomist I / Lab Assistant

Location: Laguna Hills, CA

Department: Clinical Lab Services Admin

Status: Part Time

Shift: Evenings

Pay Range*: $26.99/hr. - $39.15/hr.

*Position includes working every other weekend and holidays.

Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrates behavior consistent with our core values: Integrity, Accountability, Best Practices, Compassion and Synergy. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center’s strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities. The Certified Phlebotomist / Lab Assistant works to collect venous and/or capillary blood from patients in an acute care setting for analysis in the laboratory. This position works to process specimens for the lab in conjunction with other members of the phlebotomy team. In addition to those responsibilities, this role assists Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Doctor (MD), or Registered Nurse (RN) in performing Clinical Laboratory testing. Maintain working knowledge of departmental Standard Operating procedures as trained. Performs basic preventive maintenance as directed and maintains appropriate levels of reagents as required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  1. Under the direction of the immediate supervisor or CLS, performs pre-analytic duties related to the preparation of laboratory specimens according to department protocols and procedures. Provide quality laboratory service to clients, patients, physicians, and colleagues.
  2. Compliant at all times with hospital and departmental policies for infection control, safety and universal precautions.
  3. Consistently applies infection control and OSHA policies and procedures.
  4. Ensure proper storage, handling, disposal of hazardous material. Ensure equipment and safety devices are used as intended and designed.
  5. Ability to perform phlebotomy and/or capillary puncture as required.
  6. Performs clinical laboratory functions in a prompt and timely manner according to established guidelines, to ensure rapid and accurate treatment of patients.
  7. References test reporting and billing to support the Clinical Lab Scientist.
  8. Follows all steps to ensure proper identification of the patient/or secondary specimen container.
  9. Actively participates in performance improvement projects in the laboratory.
  10. Ability to load patient specimens on Aptio, automated track and analyzers.
  11. Record and maintain documentation to comply with safety and daily laboratory functions.
  12. Require effective communication verbally, in writing and through other means. Perform data management and documentation activities.
  13. Ability to be at work and be on time.
  14. Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives.
  15. Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner.
  16. Ability to prioritize and multitask.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications/Work Experience:

· Three years of experience in acute care laboratory in all departments preferred

· Knowledge regarding specimen stability, effects of temperature and hemolysis, and effects of anticoagulants on certain test

Education/Licensure/Certification:

· State of California: Certified Phlebotomy Technician I required

· Some college science courses preferred

· Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) Card optional
