Job summary

Baystate Health is seeking a Certified Pharmacy Technician for the overnight shift at our Springfield, MA campus. You will work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to support dispensing, restocking, and medication safety in a fast-paced hospital setting.

This full-time role requires MA licensure, national certification, and prior acute care experience. Night hours, weekend rotation, and holiday coverage are included with a comprehensive benefits package.

Responsibilities

  • Distribute medications and restock from central pharmacy to patient care areas using automated dispensing machines and Pyxis cabinets.
  • Support dispensing processes and ensure medication safety and accuracy under pharmacist supervision.
  • Triage orders, process priorities, and communicate with pharmacists and other staff to maintain patient care workflow.
  • Assist in quality improvement initiatives and uphold policies for a safe medication-use system.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

Full-time 40-hour position

Monday through Friday and every other weekend and rotation holidays

Night Shift 8:00p-6:30a

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma

Massachusetts Licensed Pharmacy Technician required

National Certification is required ( PTCB, ExCPT, or NRCPhT accepted)

Previous acute care technician experience required

Summary:

Pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in various activities of the pharmacy department. Through the leadership of the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor(s) and the operations leadership team, the pharmacy technician is responsible for the essential functions and responsibilities outlined in this document, noting every employee is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned. Leadership has the right to change or add to the job responsibilities based on changes in workflows or processes as necessary.

Employee is expected to:

Obtain and maintain appropriate knowledge and understanding of Baystate Medical Center/Baystate Health (BH) Pharmacy Services. This knowledge includes the values, policies, and procedures of BMC/BH and BH Pharmacy Services. The incumbent serves as a representative of the department both inside and outside of the Pharmacy and Hospital and must adhere to system and department compliance policies, and any applicable laws and regulations and the Baystate Operating Principles.
The certified pharmacy technician I is responsible for supporting dispensing and restocking functions from the central pharmacy to patient care areas utilizing automated inventory dispensing machines (e.g. carousel) and cabinets (e.g. Pyxis machines) as well as various medication trays and carts.

Demonstrate commitment and dedication to patient-centered delivery of care, including a thorough understanding of drug distribution workflows focusing on medication safety, quality and value; and participation in quality improvement initiatives.

Job Responsibilities:

1)Distributive Pharmacy Services:
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the position to which he/she is assigned and performs various functions associated with the institutional drug distribution system and in accordance with regulatory and compliance standards. This includes, but is not limited to:
Obtains a basic knowledge of the general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in the pharmacy department. This includes identifying medications that are light sensitive, requires refrigeration, are caustic, or poisonous. Employee is also able to use reference books to locate stability information or material safety data sheets
Operates automated technology (Pyxis, compounders, computers, etc.) in accordance to policy, procedures and manufacturing instructions.
Appropriately utilizes the automated dispensing machines to facilitate medication dispensing in accordance with BH policy and procedure.
Accurately prepares and distributes

2)Dedication to Quality Improvement Initiatives:
Accurately refills, checks, locks and stickers code carts according to policy/procedure.
Understands the various satellites and shifts and is familiar with the various specialty areas and procedures (Chemotherapy, ORs, IDS, BOSC, NICU, etc)
Maintains a working knowledge of medication error prevention methods and handling/preparation techniques for high-risk or high-alert medications, including LASA medications
Gains an understanding of population-specific preparation procedures (geriatric, adult, pediatric, and neonatal dosage forms and products)

3)Customer Service & Teamwork:
Interacts effectively with other members of the department and health care team on a regular basis. Maintains attentiveness to the rights of patients. Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
Triages orders, determines priorities, processes orders and notifies the pharmacist as appropriate.
Receives and refers incoming calls for the department, handles pharmacy window.

4)Drugs Related Factors:
Assure correct drug orders, calculations and weighings
Drugs labeling, packaging, and storage and placing in the correct location.
Rotate medication to keep expiry dates in proper order.
Maintain to quality standards in dispersal, packaging and labeling

5)Report findable or unopinionable drug issues/claims and handle issues appropriately using the correct reporting system. The use of patient safety protocols is expected. In addition the technician will assist in troubleshooting any documentation software related issues.

6)Implement errors prevention practices and use safe medication storage in the pharmacy, applying a system and making an extra safety walk. Any errors are to be followed up with the appropriate department staff so that correct practices can be followed.

7)USFD – PPE: Properly comply with PPE usage and surgical and environmental standards.

8)Safety: MPE with equipment: Read only the MPE and I do not have issues belder. The job of providing institution or high risk and any issues measured for the accessory training required are acknowledged and the staff is ready & indicated. Any surgical equipment that needs to be looked for again and notified the correct procedure. No job duties are not measured by sensor and the equipment is in the waiting.

9)Body in removing patients such: the correct final steps or needs number of any type of staccato when it is? (??? Smen good)

10)Health: HEMS or other adrenaline or other respiratory or time unit to maintain or check for more consistent information about the follow-up for the pH level measures. Bleed and at the state or campus; or context to handle the pain or work push for the assessment. The comment is of the healing.

This base pay range does not include our comprehensive benefits package and any incentive payments that may be applicable to this role.
