Job Status: Part-time (SAT & SUN 9am-5pm)

Shift/Schedule: 15-20 hours/week

Position Summary

The primary function of the Peer Support Specialist is to provide support by engaging and encouraging peers in recovery from mental health and/or substance use disorders. This role provides peers with a sense of community and belonging, supportive relationships, and valued roles. The goal is to promote wellness, self-direction, and recovery, enhancing the skill and ability of peers to engage in their chosen roles.

Essential Functions

  1. Self-identify as being in recovery for purposes of gaining participants’ trust;
  2. Assist participants in articulating their strengths and goals for recovery;
  3. Coach participants toward learning and practicing new recovery skills;
  4. Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the specialist's own recovery experience;
  5. Support participants in advocating for themselves to obtain effective services;
  6. Encourage participants to participate in social, recreational, and other therapeutic activities that enhance interpersonal skills and develop social relationships.
  7. Document progress, and record information;
  8. Provide a sense of belonging, supportive relationships, and community;
  9. Promote wellness, independence, self-direction, and recovery;
  10. Selectively share personal Recovery Story with participants, providing hope and help in changing behaviors and patterns;
  11. Help participants explore opportunities with services, emotional growth, and life recovery goals;
  12. Maintain confidentiality;
  13. Communicate with supervisors and other staff about the needs, skills, and goals of the participants
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED Required with 2 years of applicable work experience OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Second Language Preferred
  • Must be a Certified Peer Support Specialist through the State of Wisconsin
